Man who raped dying stepdaughter is jailed for nine years

A MAN who raped his 14-year-old stepdaughter as she lay dying after falling down stairs was jailed for nine years yesterday.

George McKee sexually assaulted Kerry Muchan after she was knocked unconscious at the family home in Paisley on 23 July last year. The teenager, who had become ill after taking a cocktail of alcohol and drugs, died hours after the attack.

McKee, 50, stood expressionless as the judge, Lord Philip, passed sentence at the High Court in Glasgow and said his crime had filled the public with "revulsion and horror".

He imposed an extended sentence of 12 years, of which nine will be served in custody. The judge told McKee that if he had not pleaded guilty, he would have been jailed for 12 years.

Lord Philip said he had taken into account the speech for the defence, adding: "What he [the defence counsel] said does not remove the fact that this was an appalling crime and any sentence that is imposed has to reflect the revulsion and horror that society feels at this kind of behaviour."

On the night of the assault, Kerry had taken alcohol, cannabis and Valium after going out with her sister Amanda, 16, and friends. They took her back to the house in Dalskeith Road after she fell over a few times, injuring herself. She was put into her own bed but later got up and fell down the stairs.

Her aunt found her unconscious in the early hours and, thinking that the teenager had passed out through drink, put her in the recovery position and went to her house nearby to fetch the girl's mother.

McKee was told not to move Kerry, but he carried her up to his bedroom, where he raped her.

He was found in bed with his stepdaughter by a family friend and the victim's sister. A post-mortem examination found she died of head injuries sustained in her series of falls.
