OVER in the States, the Fed chairman’s biannual appearance in front of the Senate and House committees will be studied for hints that a third round of quantitative easing, or “QE3”, could be forthcoming.

The Bank of England, European Central Bank and the People’s Bank of China have eased their monetary policy in recent weeks, but the Fed is the daddy of them all, and any suggestion that it might start pumping billions of dollars into the economy again will lead to excitement on global markets.
