Heart-stopping design by BBC Dragons Den’s Peter Jones

HE MAY be best known for giving contestants a grilling on BBC2’s Dragons Den but now Peter Jones has tried his hand at designing “pocket squares” – or those wee hankies that stick out the top pockets of suits to you and me.

Jones has joined actor Tom Ellis and Olympic long jumper Chris Tomlinson to design the hankies for car maker Alfa Romeo, which is using the fashion accessories to raise money for medical charity Heart Research UK.

Elliott leaves Standard Life

Mark Elliott, group head of internal communications for Standard Life, has left the business for pastures new after just over a year in the role with the insurance giant.

Previously Elliott spent a number of years on the front line of the banking crisis, having been head of public relations at HBOS before it was brought to the brink of collapse. He was then head of media relations for Lloyds Banking Group.

Post-It Note oil rig sails to Aberdeen

You may have thought that those yellow Post-It Notes on your desk were only useful for taking down telephone messages and flirting with the blonde in accounts, but Aberdonian artist Mark McCracken has found a whole new use for the sticky paper notelets.

McCracken has created a work of art depicting Dana Petroleum’s Hanze rig using Post-Its as part of the British Science Festival, which kicks off in Aberdeen tomorrow.

Ardbeg takes small step for Scotch

Sticking with science and distilling director Bill Lumsden will be toasting “one small step for Scotch” after he launched Ardbeg Galileo, a whisky to commemorate the father of astronomy.

As part of this year’s Edinburgh International Science Festival, a test tube full of Ardbeg was sent into orbit on the International Space Station to study how zero gravity affects maturation.
