Business people: More than cake for Jonathan Evans’s birthday

City headhunter Jonathan Evans will be celebrating his 50th birthday in some style in Scotland this week.

Evans, chairman of international search firm Sammons Associates, has invited 20 lucky friends up to the beautiful Bearnock Lodge at Glen Urquhart near Inverness for what he calls “some hunting, shooting and fishing”. Not content with the traditional pursuits of the Barbour-and-wellies set, he also promises “pipers, haggis, highland dancing and fireworks”.

Evans, who is also a keen half marathon runner when not placing bankers in highly-paid employment, is known to work and play hard, and attracted media attention recently when he warned publicly that new Barclays chairman Sir David Walker risked triggering “a mass exodus” of investment bankers from the bank if he cracked down too hard on pay at the bank in the wake of controversial former chief executive Bob Diamond’s exit.

Back home, done with Down Under

Charles MacLaren is returning to the main Lloyds fold after building a 140-strong risk and credit team at the bank’s Australian subsidiary.

As the new head of credit for the group’s wholesale banking and markets division in Scotland, he will work with its mid-market business customers and large corporates.

Drawing on the female perspective

Three Shetland businesswomen joined delegates from across Europe in Slovakia last week for a series of workshops on the challenges of juggling business with commitments at home and in the community.

Cheryl Jamieson of Glansin Glass in Unst, Diane Taylor of Shetland Resolve in Dunrossness, and Kathy Coull of the Textile Workshop on Fair Isle were the UK delegates at the women-only event at the Agroinstitute near Bratislava.
