Andy Murray, who won his first Grand Slam title in New York in the early hours of yesterday morning, has proved a winner for Betfair, which said more than £58 million of wagers were placed on his Wimbledon final encounter with Roger Federer.

Although Murray lost that match, in four sets, the betting exchange said the showpiece event was its biggest ever market as it reported a 13 per cent rise in revenues to £91.6m for the three months to 31 July.

However, chief financial officer Stephen Morana, who announced yesterday that he was stepping down after ten years at the company, said that a slower start to the football season, and reduced interest in other sports during the Olympic Games, had resulted in slower revenue growth in August.
