Axe falls on 250 jobs at Ovaltine plant
Almost 250 jobs are to go at a factory which has manufactured Ovaltine since 1913, it has been announced.
Production at the plant in Kings Langley, Hertfordshire, will end in May next year under moves to improve competitiveness, with the axe falling on 245 jobs.
Novartis Consumer Health said production of Ovaltine, a malted drink product, will be increased at its other European factory in Switzerland.
The company, which sells ten million jars of Ovaltine in the UK every year, said it was also ending production of malt extract in this country.
Kevin White, chief executive of Novartis, said: "The consolidation of two production sites into one will strengthen our competitiveness.
"At the same time the availability and high standards of Ovaltine can be maintained in all of our European markets."
The company said sales of Ovaltine had been increasing in the UK following a recent advertising campaign.
