Young, who was dubbed "Lord Suit" in the 1980s by satirical magazine Private Eye, takes over the role from Labour's choice of enterprise adviser Lord Sugar. In an echo of his television catchphrase, Sugar, anointed by Gordon Brown, was fired by Cameron's coalition government. Cameron promised Young would lead a "brutally honest" review of red tape affecting UK businesses, adding that enterprise was crucial to his efforts to create a "new economic dynamism" .

He said: "I am seeking nothing less than a wholesale change in attitude from my government and I need help to get there. So I am delighted that Lord Young has agreed to be my enterprise adviser; he'll be working to identify what we need to do to help small businesses grow."

Young, the former chairman of Cable & Wireless who served as trade secretary under Thatcher, said: "I'll be focusing on what barriers government policy have put in the way of small business development and helping to advise on what can be done to make life easier for businesses to start and grow."
