Johnston sees profits slide

EVENING NEWS publisher Johnston Press saw profits drop more than 15 per cent over the first half of the year, after a fall in advertising revenue of 9.5 per cent.

The regional publisher, which includes 18 daily and 300 weekly local UK newspapers, saw sales fall 6.3 per cent to 293.1 million, while operating profit fell 15.6 per cent to 81.6m and pre-tax fell 18.1 per cent to 62.5m.

The company said it had cut costs by 7.6m.

Chief executive Tim Bowdler said: "We expect to deliver a result reflective of the difficult market conditions."
