Jacobite raises the standard for Aberdeen Angus breeders

THE February bull sales got under way at Stirling yesterday with the show of Aberdeen Angus and Shorthorns. The large numbers forward in the spring mean that the traditional four days of shows and sales is split into two separate weeks, with native breeds and Limousin taking place in the next couple of days and, in two weeks time, Simmental and Charolais bulls will be sold.

With 234 Angus bulls entered, the judge, Colin Hutchings from Devon, had his work cut out choosing his champion. He chose Ewan and Ian Brewis’ intermediate leader, Eastfield Jacobite, by Rawburn Rochester, from Lempitlaw, Kelso. Reserve was the junior champion, Skaill Dido, from well-known Orkney breeder and commercial cattle farmer, Colin Davidson.

Former Scotland rugby captain David Sole has only been breeding Angus at Glenbuchat, Strathdon, for the past five years and was delighted to take the senior championship with his Turriff show winner, Glenbuchat Bruce.

Angus females sold to a top of 11,500gns for Rawburn Ebony from John Elliot, Roxburgh Mains, Kelso, to Angus Hodge, who is building up a herd in Norfolk.

Lady Glendyne dispersed her Hurdcott herd from Angus, founded in 1977, and females sold to a top of 5,500gns while the stock bull, Wedderlie Posse, made 8,000gns to Rae Grieve, Carlhurlie, Fife.

The biggest show of Shorthorn bulls for many years was led by Donald Biggar, Grange, Castle Douglas, with his senior champion, Castleton Duke, which was reserve male champion at the Highland show in 2011. Reserve was Graeme Massie’s intermediate champion from Dinnet, Blelack Major.
