ITV to make viewers pay for shows
ITV's new management team are expected to announce plans this week to switch some of the company's most popular shows to pay-television channels.
At risk of a backlash from viewers and politicians, chairman Archie Norman and his chief executive Adam Crozier are thought to be persuaded that pay-TV will help guarantee the future for the firm.
An end to free major shows could cause uproar, though it is thought unlikely that flagship programmes such as Coronation Street and Emmerdale would make the move.
However, the company is now considering a number of top-line programmes that could be screened on the Sky or Virgin Media platforms where they could command a significant return and help underpin ITV's income stream.
The company is expected to show a first-half pre-tax profit of about 115 million against a loss last time of 105m.
