Viagra firm set to axe 1000 posts
VIAGRA maker Pfizer said it planned to axe around 1000 jobs at two UK plants, with one of the factories being sold.
The company, known for its erectile dysfunction drug, said 571 jobs will be going at its soon-to-be-sold plant in Morpeth, Northumberland, and a further 400 in Sandwich, Kent.
The Morpeth site, which makes drugs as well as packaging tablets for more than 100 global markets, was deemed surplus to requirements. Pfizer, which was bought by Pharmacia in 2003, has been reviewing its output and said it needed to "consolidate activities at a smaller number of sites" because of overcapacity in production.
Tony Maddaluna, vice president of Pfizer global manufacturing, said: "These decisions
are a direct result of the fact-based evaluation process carried out since the Pharmacia acquisition, which has highlighted that the capacity provided by these operations is not required."
Pfizer said that the cuts at Kent would take place over the next "several years".
