US given more time in steel row
THE European Union has given the United States a few more days before nations start applying billions of pounds in trade sanctions in retaliation for US steel tariffs declared illegal under international law, the World Trade Organisation said today.
In a move suggesting the US is bowing to pressure to drop its tariffs, all the countries involved in the case have jointly agreed to put off formally adopting a WTO ruling on the issue until December 10 - the last day it can legally be done. It had originally been scheduled for next Monday.
The EU, Japan and Norway have said they will start imposing duties on US imports five days after the ruling is adopted unless the extra tariffs, which President Bush has claimed are needed to give breathing space to the beleaguered US steel industry, are dropped.
