Sales of Optos’ Daytona surge ahead

EYE scanner maker Optos said strong sales of its new Daytona device pushed revenues beyond the $190 million (£118m) mark in its last financial year.

In a trading statement ahead of its results for the year to 30 September, the Dunfermline-based company said sales had been strong in the last quarter, meaning revenues for the year should be ahead of previous market expectations.

It said the installed customer base for its core products increased 11 per cent during the year to 4,700.

Daytona manufacture reached current planned capacity in the last quarter, allowing an order backlog to be fully cleared and resulting in an installed base of 329 devices at the end of September.

Optos said operating profit is also expected to be slightly above market consensus, while gross margins should improve during the current year as Daytona volumes increase.

Shares in the firm added more than 6 per cent in early trading today.

Chief executive Roy Davis said: “I am delighted with the company’s achievements this year and in particular, the manufacturing scale-up and market roll-out of Daytona. The reaction to this instrument has been very positive and I am excited by the opportunities it brings to the business.

“Our near-term focus is to drive sales of Daytona in all our key markets and to continue our success with the 200Tx instrument in the ophthalmology market.”
