SCOTTISH Enterprise chairman Crawford Gillies was yesterday appointed as a non-executive director at outsourcing firm Mitie.

The appointment is the second at board level for Gillies at a listed company, building on his role as a non-executive director at Standard Life.

Although Mitie declined to confirm the fees payable to Gillies for the post, it said they would be in line with other non-executive directors at the firm, who receive at least £46,000.

His role at Standard Life, which also includes being chairman of the company’s remuneration committee, commands fees of £95,000 and he received £38,721 last year for his part-time Scottish Enterprise role.

Mitie said Gillies will “add considerable experience to the board particularly in relation to his breadth of strategic insight and global perspective”.

He will also be a member of the audit, nomination and remuneration committees at the company.

Earlier this month Mitie won a facilities management services contract worth at least £30 million from the Scottish Government.

The five-year contract will start on 1 October and covers more than 80 buildings in Scotland.

Gillies, who is also chairman of consultancy Control Risks Group Holdings, worked with strategic management consultancy Bain & Company over 25 years, becoming a partner in 1988 and heading the firm’s
European business from 2001 until he stepped down at the end of 2005.

Last month a storm erupted over Scottish Enterprise’s chief executive Lena Wilson, one of Scotland’s highest-paid civil servants, accepting a £55,000-a-year non-executive directorship at London-based FTSE 100 company Intertek.
