BAE shipbuilder talks continue
BAE Systems, the defence giant, has confirmed talks with VT Group, Babcock and the Devonport shipyard are on-going in a move that would create a single UK shipbuilding company.
Commenting on renewed speculation, a spokesman for BAE said: "This story could have been written at any time. We are talking to everyone."
BAE, which owns the Scotstoun and Govan yards on the Clyde, is under pressure from the Ministry of Defence to create a unified shipbuilding group to bid for Royal Navy contracts and win overseas work. The MoD is understood to have set a December deadline for progress on the talks, which would create a group with assets of about 1bn.
