Glasgow skills centre signs £1m 3D imaging contract with Ferrari designer
A GLASGOW-BASED technology skills centre has signed a deal with Ferrari stylist Italdesign to help develop a 3D imaging system for the car industry, writes Scott Reid.
Urban Learning Space – a 1 million initiative backed by Scottish Enterprise – is one of six European partners involved in the 3m (2.3m) “Maximus” project. The centre, based in Glasgow’s Lighthouse complex, will test and evaluate the finished technology.
Italdesign is famed for styling products for household names such as Indesit, Samsung and Maserati as well as iconic sports car maker Ferrari.
Don McIntyre, technical director at Urban Learning Space, said: “This type of technology will revolutionise the way cars are designed. It gives car designers the opportunity to lift their work off the drawing board and project it into life-size animated models through the use of a 3D headset.”
SE Glasgow’s director of skills and learning, Stephanie Young, added: “The Urban Learning Space is fast developing an international reputation as critical partner in innovative multinational technology.”
Urban Learning Space was set up to equip local people with new technology skills.
