Furniture boosts John Lewis sales
RETAILER John Lewis yesterday said furniture sales were the "crowning glory" of a strong week for homewares at its department stores.
Sales of beds and bedroom furniture were the highest ever outside of clearance periods in the week to 24 October.
Overall department store sales were up 9.1 per cent on the year, to 56.8 million, although the company noted that this figure was up against weak sales in the comparative week last year and was lower than the same period in 2007. John Lewis's sales have risen for the past six weeks.
In Scotland, the chain's Glasgow store posted a 9.9 per cent rise, but Edinburgh's sales slipped 0.9 per cent and Aberdeen's fell 7.9 per cent.
