Pub chains toast strong sales surge
Greene King counts Belhaven Best among its brands.
PUB chains Marston’s and Fuller’s reported strong sales growth yesterday offering more evidence of cash-strapped Britons seeking solace in their local boozer.
Marston’s, which has 2,150 pubs and also owns beers including Pedigree and Hobgoblin, said sales at its managed pubs open more than a year rose by 5 per cent in the 16 weeks to 21 January, with food sales up 5.5 per cent and sales of drinks rising 4.8 per cent.
The firm, which benefited from mild weather, said profits were about 3 per cent higher in its tenanted pubs during the 16 weeks.
Fuller’s, which has some 360 venues, reported a 5.1 per cent rise at its managed pubs and a 1 per cent increase in profit at its tenanted pubs.
Rivals Greene King, JD Wetherspoon and Mitchells & Butlers have also reported strong sales growth in recent weeks.
