Company behind Famous Grouse whisky mulls expansion

THE company behind the Famous Grouse whisky is expected to announce further investment plans this week, possibly to increase capacity.

Edrington Group, based in Glasgow, will unveil annual figures that are likely to show further growth in profits and revenue as booming areas of the world get an increasing thirst for top whisky brands.

With whisky firms enjoying the benefits of soaring exports, it is thought Edrington will indicate a focus on expanding into emerging and growing markets in the Americas and Asia, where demand has been strongest.

Some drinks firms, including Diageo and Pernod Ricard, have announced plans to expand distilling operations to meet growing demand, and there is speculation that Edrington may follow suit.

Ian Curle, chief executive of Edrington, which also produces The Macallan, Highland Park and Cutty Sark, is expected to say that he will focus on building the group’s existing portfolio rather than pursue acquisitions.

There are persistent market rumours that Indian tycoon Vijay Mallya is seeking a buyer for Glasgow-based Whyte & Mackay, but it is not a business likely to interest Edrington.

Earlier this year, Edrington and bourbon giant Jim Beam announced a rise in profits at their joint distribution business Maxxium.

The Stirling-based spirits and wine distributor posted a 31 per cent rise in pre-tax profits to £5 million.
