Farm disease roadshow launched
SCOTLAND'S Moredun, a world leading institute for animal research, is taking to the road this month with strong messages on how livestock producers can help their profitability through better control of several major pernicious diseases.
Liver fluke, Johne's disease and bovine virus diarrhoea (BVD) have all been highlighted as significant concerns by Scottish livestock farmers.
Both BVD and Johne's have a major impact on the health and welfare of cattle and can result in a significant financial loss at the farm level.
Liver fluke costs Scottish producers millions of pounds every year due to lower production rates of infected beasts, and its incidence is increasing.
Professor Julie Fitzpatrick, Moredun's scientific director, urged farmers and their vets to attend these free events. She said: "The subjects we are covering have all been suggested by our Scottish board of regional advisers, most of whom are farmers themselves.
"We hope these meetings will help farmers learn more about specific animal health problems, enabling them to keep their stock in maximum health and productivity."
John Ross, who farms in Stranraer and chairs the Moredun Foundation, also urged farmers to attend. He added: "We hope the meetings will highlight to farmers that developing effective health plans with their vet can enhance the bottom line."
Moredun will hold four meetings. They are:
• Johne's Disease and BVD – Monday, 16 November, at Pentland Hotel, Thurso.
• Controlling BVD – Monday. 23 November. at the Ardshiel Hotel, Campbeltown.
• Liver fluke control – Tuesday, 24 November, at Lanark Auction Market.
• Liver fluke control – Thursday, 26 November, at the Douglas Arms Hotel, Castle Douglas.
