ASCO bid for global skills base

ASCO, the energy logistics group, is to tap into the cream of its 1,600-strong global workforce and roll out a specialist advisory service as part of its growth plan.

The Aberdeen-based firm, whose client base includes oil and gas majors as well as independent operators and service providers, is bringing together a group of “thinkers” to create an effective one-stop shop for logistics management.

It will offer the service to companies regardless of where in the world they are operating and comes as the group ramps up both its overseas presence and range of services.

Last week, Asco reported a steady rise in underlying profits to just over £30 million, but aims to double that figure over the next five years.

Its current head count, half of which is based in Scotland, is also likely to double as it adds skills in fast-growing economies such as Brazil and Canada.

Chief operating officer Derek Smith said: “We know what the customers need and are putting a specialist team together that can be deployed on a global basis. We have just completed a study for one of the largest oil companies in the world who asked us to come out and advise on how to manage offshore logistics. This dedicated team will be able to draw on world resources.”

The group, launched in 1967, and acquired late last year by private equity outfit Doughty Hanson, operates in more than 20 locations.
