THE Federation of Small Businesses has branded the Scottish Government’s response to a review of business rates as a “missed opportunity” and “timid”.
Under the proposals, ministers will give local councils the power to vary business rates relief.
FSB Scottish policy convenor Andy Willox said: “Our property based taxation system is outdated, based on the economy of the past and under severe pressure. Yet their response to this challenge looks timid.”
Scottish Chambers of Commerce chief executive Liz Cameron gave the proposed changes a “guarded welcome”, but the Scottish Property Federation warned that the “system of ratcheting up rates with inflation each year meant they were out of touch with commercial reality”.
