Manufacturing sees fragile upturn after 18 bad months
MANUFACTURING output in the UK has ended an 18-month run of weakness, but the upturn remains fragile and patchy, a report today revealed.
According to the latest CBI/Experian Regional Trends Survey, most regions reported a rise in output over the last three months.
In Scotland and the north-west of England output growth was strong, while several other areas saw moderate expansion.
But Yorkshire & Humber experienced stagnation and in two regions, the East Midlands and Northern Ireland, manufacturing continued to decline.
Scotland reported a significant fall in the proportion of firms operating below capacity.
Experian said it estimated 23,000 manufacturing jobs would go nationally in the current quarter - but few in Scotland.
Doug Godden of the CBI said: "Disappointing orders are a cause for concern."
