Big push to create apprenticeships in UK companies
BUSINESS secretary Vince Cable will today kick off the UK government’s largest-ever effort to convince companies that they should take on apprentices.
Cable will join trainees from the creative arts industry at Channel 4’s head office in London to launch National Apprenticeship Week, which will feature more than 500 events around the UK.
Skillset, the sector skills council for the creative industries, in partnership with the National Apprenticeships Service, pledged to work with 300 businesses in industries including fashion, media and design to deliver 500 apprenticeships, with the first places offered in September.
Companies including British Airways, Hilton Hotels and technology firm Telemetry have already thrown their weight behind the campaign.
North of the Border, Barrhead Travel is launching a “youth development programme” after recruiting 23 apprentices last year.
Five apprentices from Fife-based window fitter CR Smith will be discussing life on the job on micro-blogging website Twitter this week. Deputy prime minister Nick Clegg visited CR Smith last month to study its scheme.
