Controversial Breastlight company in liquidation
The company behind a controversial device which helps women check their breasts for lumps at home has gone into liquidation after running out of cash.
Johnston Carmichael has been appointed provisional liquidator of PWB Health, which employs three people in Dumbarton, and hopes to find a buyer.
It created the "Breastlight" in 2006, which involves shining powerful LED lighting through the breast to show up any changes, such as lumps that may be cancerous.
PWB won a major funding award from the Scottish Enterprise Co-Investment Fund.
Wideblue, the Glasgow-based design and technology consultancy, and Kelvin Capital, the west of Scotland business angel syndicate, also invested in the business. However, last December, Cancer Research called on retailer Boots to stop stocking the Breastlight, saying there was "no clear evidence" that the torch could reliably detect cancerous lumps.
The product is sold in 12 countries and in 650 Boots stores throughout the UK.
