WH Smith on way to £100m profit

Books, newsagent and stationery chain WH Smith is on track to meet full-year forecasts as its strategy to improve profit margins and cost savings continue to pay off.

In a brief trading update ahead of October’s full-year results, the firm said its travel division – outlets at airports, railway stations, motorway service stations, hospitals and work places – was making further progress in winning new business both in Britain and overseas.

The high street business, meanwhile, continued to deliver a solid performance despite a strong publishing schedule in the second half of the previous year which made comparatives tougher.

Analysts are forecasting a pre-tax profit of about £107 million for the year.
