Outgoing Virgin Media chief executive Neil Berkett has been named as the new chairman of Guardian Media Group (GMG).

Berkett, who has been on the GMG board as a non-executive director since November 2009, replaces Dame Amelia Fawcett who is retiring in September after four years at the helm of the Guardian’s parent company.

Virgin Media agreed to a $23.3 billion (£15bn) takeover by US cable giant Liberty Global in February and Berkett will be succeeded as boss of the telecoms firm by former News International chief executive Tom Mockridge.
