Broughton brews up growth

AN independent Scottish brewery is planning to expand into new markets after securing new financial support.

Broughton Ales, which produces 18 cask ales and 11 bottled beers including Black Douglas, The Reiver and Merlin's Ale, is planning to expand its operations in a bid to overcome current market difficulties.

The firm has secured the support of Clydesdale Bank that will allow it to expand. Alastair Mouat, who joined the company as managing director from Belhaven in 1994, said: "For obvious reasons the industry has slowed, but smaller breweries – the ones that are producing quality real ales – are winning the battle against the slowdown."

The deal was agreed by Clydesdale's financial solutions centre in Edinburgh, which is run by managing partner Robert Gibson.
