A SHARP fall in motor insurance premiums has boosted Scottish drivers after several years of hikes that added to the soaring cost of owning a vehicle.

Car insurance premiums have plunged by more than 10 per cent in parts of Scotland over the past year, according to research published today.

The average cost of comprehensive cover across the UK has dropped by 7.1 per cent since June 2011, the latest Confused.com/Towers Watson price index shows.

Scottish drivers have seen some of the biggest reductions. The average price in the Borders is down 9.5 per cent to £537, while Central Scotland motorists are being quoted an average premium of £642, 10.3 per cent lower than a year ago. In the east and North-east prices are down 9.5 per cent.

Young male drivers, hit hard by the increases of recent years, are seeing the biggest premium reductions, reflecting increased use of insurance technology that rewards careful driving with lower costs.
