Cleaned-out bank customers find help is at hand over weekend

BRANCHES OF RBS and Natwest opened on a Sunday for the first time yesterday, to deal with the backlog of problems caused by the technical meltdown.

The RBS in Byres Road, Glasgow, had a slow trickle of customers, about half of whom had experienced problems with their accounts.

John Flaherty, 26, and his partner Michelle McCrorie, 27, were both paid on Friday, but the money appeared in their accounts only to disappear.

“The money showed in my account on Friday and I could get cash out, but I couldn’t on Saturday and found the money had been taken out again,” said Mr Flaherty. “I had to go to Turnberry and wasn’t able to put fuel in the car. The branch can give you cash and are very sympathetic. It’s obviously not the fault of front-line staff.”

He added: “The rent is due in a few days so we will see if that causes any problems.”

Another customer, who asked not to be named, said the cash machine showed only £60 of the £160 that should have been in his account.

On Twitter, Amy Gould from Motherwell wrote: “So apparently my bank account went from £680 to 40p since Friday without me spending a penny. SORT IT OUT RBS!”

Liam McCall from Uphall, West Lothian, wrote: “Day three of the RBS ‘glitch’ and i still have no money. My phones gonna get cut off and my bike insurance is invalid cos it’s not been paid!”
