Asda packs in bigger share of the market
SUPERMARKET chain Asda's market share is an at all-time high as belt-tightening consumers hunt for lower-priced goods.
Asda saw its market share rise to 17.3 per cent in the 12 weeks to February 22, compared with 17 per cent for the same period last year, while market leader Tesco saw its share drop from 30.8 per cent last year to 30.3 per cent.
The study, conducted by market analysts TNS Worldpanel, concluded that the shift was down to shoppers "continuing to seek lower prices, both in terms of switching outlets and also switching brands within outlet".
TNS said: "Asda's consistent low-price positioning is paying off with the highest year-on-year growth rate of the top four at 8.8 per cent, leading to an all-time record share for a 12-week period."
