Aggreko confirms Olympic power deal

AGGREKO, the Scottish-based international power equipment company, has disclosed that its contract to supply temporary power to the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008 will be worth about $35 million (£17.7m).

The Olympics contract is one of the most sought-after by temporary power generation suppliers in the world of sport and the company, based in Glasgow, had said in July it had been named as exclusive supplier.

Now the contract has been signed, Aggreko also gave more detail of the work it will do. As well as supporting both the opening and closing ceremonies at the National Stadium in Beijing, the group's equipment will be used to power field-of-play lighting and camera equipment in the various stadiums as well as powering the international broadcasting centre, which manages TV feeds to broadcasters around the world.

Rupert Soames, the chief executive of Aggreko, said: "We are delighted to have signed this contract, which is one of the largest contracts ever awarded for temporary power for a sporting event.

"We look forward to supporting the organising committee in their task of providing faultless execution of the Olympic Games, and uninterrupted broadcasting to hundreds of millions of viewers worldwide."

Aggreko also supplied power equipment to the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta.
