Aer Lingus eyes Scots airports for new base
IRISH airline Aer Lingus is considering Glasgow or Edinburgh airports for future expansion after opening its first base outside Dublin only last year.
Enda Corneille, the airline's corporate affairs director, said the airports were contenders for one of three new UK "aircraft bases" it planned.
However, he gave no timescale and said the move depended on acquiring new short-haul aircraft. Corneille said the bases would follow the Belfast "template", where three aircraft serve ten European routes.
However, a Scottish base would face stiff competition from Irish rival Ryanair, which has a major base at Prestwick and is expanding fast at Edinburgh.
Aer Lingus carries 200,000 passengers a year on its daily flights between Edinburgh and Glasgow and Dublin.
