Smear campaign targets Obama's 'link to terrorist'

Published Date: 06 October 2008
BARACK Obama's campaign team yesterday said the Republicans had launched a muck-raking war in the final stages of the election race after Sarah Palin accused the Democratic candidate of "palling around with terrorists".
Mrs Palin, reinvigorated by a feisty performance in last week's vice-presidential debate, this weekend revived the controversy of Mr Obama's association with Bill Ayers, a founder member of the terrorist group Weather Underground, which carried out bombings in America in the early 1970s.

"We see America as the greatest force for good in this world," said Mrs Palin, campaigning in the swing state of Colorado. "Our opponent, though, is someone who sees America, it seems, as being so imperfect that he's palling around with terrorists who would target their own country."

The Obama campaign hit back hard, accusing Republicans of repeating the so-called Swift Boat campaign of 2004 in which Democratic hopeful John Kerry was falsely accused, through a TV advertising campaign, of lying about his Vietnam war service.

"It's not surprising they would be launching Swift Boat-like attacks in hopes of deflecting attention from the nation's economic ills," said spokesman Hari Sevugan.

Mr Obama's association with Mr Ayers has been a perennial feature of the election campaign. Mr Ayers, now a university professor in Chicago, was picked along with Mr Obama to sit on a charity board in the 1990s to raise money for a school improvement project.

The project itself has passed scrutiny, and managers of the Obama campaign say their candidate did not choose Mr Ayers to serve on the committee, but simply served alongside him.

Mr Obama says he has had only sporadic contact with Mr Ayers in recent years, most recently in 2005, and that their sole meeting since then was when they bumped into each other on the street where they both live.

But Republicans say the Ayers issue is relevant because a candidate must be judged by those he associates with.

It has featured in negative commercials, along with reminders about two other controversies: Mr Obama's property dealings with convicted fraudster Tony Rezko and his association with controversial black pastor the Rev Jeremiah Wright.

But it is unclear if the charge will stick: Mr Ayers has since admitted to his crimes and become a respected Chicago professor. His links with Mr Obama appear to be tenuous and he is not involved in the election campaign.

"What they're going after is Obama's character. They are implying a lot of things that are not necessarily true," said William McPherson, a Washington political commentator.

The Washington Post reported that, with Mr Obama ahead in the polls and voters angry with the Republican handling of the economy, the McCain campaign had decided to go after Mr Obama's character in the remaining campaigning weeks.

Mr McCain's staff say they will begin showing campaign commercials this week highlighting the ties.

Mr Obama meanwhile is determined to keep the economy as the focus. With Congress agreeing the $700 billion Wall Street bail-out campaign last week, a McCain official was quoted as saying he hoped to put the issue "behind us".

Speaking in North Carolina yesterday, Mr Obama said: "Senator McCain and his operatives are gambling that he can distract you with smears rather than talk to you about substance. They'd rather try to tear our campaign down than lift this country up.

"It's what you do when you're out of touch, out of ideas, and running out of time."

An Obama campaign advert to be screened nationwide today derides Mr McCain as erratic in a crisis, reminding viewers that he was formerly a proponent of the deregulation that many blame for the current financial crisis.

McCain brother in 'communist' jibe

THE brother of Republican presidential candidate John McCain made an apparent joke at a campaign rally this weekend that might not play well in parts of the newly electorally competitive state of Virginia.

Joe McCain, speaking at an event in support of his brother, called two Democratic-leaning areas of Northern Virginia "communist country", according to a report in the Washington Post.

"I've lived here for at least ten years and before that, about every third duty I was in either Arlington or Alexandria, up in communist country," Mr McCain, a navy veteran, said of his military postings. He then apologised, but the remark drew laughter from the crowd, according to the report.

Virginia has long been a Republican stronghold in presidential elections, but Barack Obama is running neck and neck with, or ahead of, Mr McCain, in recent state polls.

"This was Joe McCain's unsuccessful attempt at humour," a McCain campaign spokeswoman said.

Steve Chapman, of the Chicago Tribune argued Sunday that the relationship, which he said Obama was disingenuously trying to downplay, does matter.

"It's hard to imagine he would be so indulgent if we learned that John McCain had a long association with a former Klansman who used to terrorize African-Americans," Chapman wrote. "Obama's conduct exposes a moral blind spot about these onetime terrorists, who get a pass because they a) fall on the left end of the spectrum and b) haven't planted any bombs lately.

No5 Carolyn.... It's not the only thing Obama's trying to downplay.
In his wikipedia biography there's mention in the links section that he's descended from African, Irish, Dutch and German stock, four mentions of his Christian heritage but not a single word or hint that his father was a Muslim.
What else is he trying to hide???

I'm no McCain fan but if his brother makes a harmless joke, must it be taken as the most egregious insult ever uttered?
Politics can be so disingenuous and tiresome.

No nationality mix up, no bending of facts.
Obama's Kenyan father was Muslim, and his Indonesian step-father was Muslim; his half-brother, also in Kenya, is a Muslim.
IMO, it's very un-Christian of Obama to not help the starving brother, and at least try to get him food and shelter, if not an education.

I'll tell you who has an interesting point of view concerning Barrack Obama. that is Webster Tarpley. Tarpley believes that Obama is a puppet of the people who rule us and describes him as a Manchurian Candidate, a person nurtured for the presidency over a long period of time.

here's a link where you can actually listen to an interview given by Tarpley on this.

http://www.deepjournal.com/p/7/a/en/1497.html

Tarpley is an academic type who has written quite a few big books. He's got 2 out on Obama, the latest one just released is shown at this link.

http://www.lulu.com/content/3455852

But here is Tarpley's own web site where he shows lots of his books. and you can read on-line his biggest book which is about the bush family.

http://www.tarpley.net/

From Tarpley's web site you can read for free on-line about the Bush family's support for NAZIs and all the other criminal things they've been associated with.

You can criticize Tarpley, but you can't say that he's criticizing Obama just because Obama is a democrat.

And Palin, with typical US arrogance/ignorance, claims the US are the greatest force for good in the world. Is that some kind of sick joke?

What a stupid b**** she is.

PS Wally - I sympathise with you mate. That bill is terrible for ordinary Americans and once again exposes the "lie" of so-called "free markets" which are not about freedom, they are about maintaining power. "Free" markets are only for the subjugated.

I will admit that it is curious that this Ayers fellow is a college professor apparently and has some prominence in Chicago circles. yet when he was young he organized crimes. and I may be wrong, but I think people may have died in those crimes. So why is he prominent is my question, why did his employer make him a college professor? Doesn't make sense.

But Obama was in 2'nd grade when these crimes occurred. from what I understand the nature of Ayers in chicago is that a rising democrat politician would automatically hob-nob with Ayers. the whole thing is strange.

Regarding Palin's statement that she sees America as the greatest force for good in this world, that is an outrageous statement from a christian point of view. From an historical point of view our country did bring forth in this world much that is good, that is true. But today our country is bringing forth war, destruction and starvation for the poor. The rulers of the US have created this insane economic pattern where the world 'lends' America massive quantities of money and America just spends the money rather than producing for the sake of trade. So, her statement is incorrect on its face. but more importantly, she's not being humble, she's boasting, she's forgotten that all real achievements are made with god guiding people.

29

Wally,

You know Richard Nixon was never blamed for his Prescott Bush association. Prescott Bush was by the way George W. Bush's grandfather, GHW Bush's father, he was the guy arrested in 1942 because he was supporting the NAZIs as a bank president in the US. Prescott Bush put an ad in a newspaper once that Richard Nixon answered. That is what eventually led Nixon into politics. I mean Prescott Bush was Nixon's boss, giving him jobs to do for several years prior to when Bush's clique decided to put nixon up for office first as a congressman. Thats a lot more substantial relationship than Obama and Ayers.

oh and for LHTT in 25 I note that the Bush family was exposed by Tarpley's book that came out in 1992 and I linked to it (you can read it online for free). the information is uncovered and the media keeps it quiet. Before being elected Bush said he was christian, he said humility would guide his foreign policy, he said he was a compassionate person, he said he'd never take an important act in foreign policy without approval by allies. When deception becomes the norm it is hard for the citizenry to stay on top of things.

In this article I linked to it is curious why the Obama supporters speak that way. Are they going to attack McCain's character?

Many people in America feel that the last 2 presidential candidates are frequently just puppets of the people that rule and that this elite group that rules behind the scenes really decides who it is that should win at this stage. and that at this point subtle things are done in the media and sometimes even in the campaigns themselves to cause the public to tilt one way or the other. and people are now saying that the situation is tilting to Obama.
32

Wally,

Harry Reid: George W Bush and George HW Bush come from a family where 2 generations supported the NAZIs. And Prescott Bush was a traitor who supported the NAZIs during the war. After Pearl Harbor he still helped the NAZIs as a bank president. He laundered money for them, he found business contacts for them, he was trying to find industrial diamonds for their factories and this was DURING the war. this makes everyone from that family unfit.

Christian fundamentalists believe in the teachings of Lord Jesus and only an ignorant and prejudiced person could ascribe such a repulsive mindset to an entire group of people. That is exactly the kind of stereotyping that people find so distasteful. Where do you get off voicing an opinion that is so judgmental and distorted?

Here's the new's, Sloopy, a significant fraction of Christian fundamentalists ARE Black!! Well, what do you make of that? If you are so diminished that you have to inflate yourself by slurring good people from 8,000 miles away, you've got real problems, and if beating up on people who would give you the shirts off their backs, if that makes you feel better about yourself, then perhaps there is some therapeutic value in it for you. Sort of a bracer for the day, let the cracker redneck ignorant hillbilly stump jumpers have it with both barrels, and without a shred of evidence accuse people of racism with nothing more to substantiate that charge than your own morbid imagination . Hey all U squawking Dudes, and very boring Dudesses.

In the 2004 election The GOP attack dogs ''Swift Boat People" cost John Kerry the election.

Their smear tactics worked . As a result the American economy continued its downward slide, under Bush, ending in a near total meltdown in 2008.

But in 2008, a rerun by the GOP attack dogs against Obama will not fly.

Obama is very intelligent, and reacts ,like lightning, and the American people are more concerned about loosing their jobs ( which puts them in a 100% total recession) and losing their homes.

Smear tactics are always used by the GOP, when they see their opponent moving ahead. As Obama is doing.

The GOP actions ,show the rest of the world, how brazenly immoral and corrupt my country's politicians are.

Sad Sad Sad.

Mikey,

Let's face it. I've said from the beginning that the next POTUS would be a white man and that was before the primaries even started.

The US is far too backward to elect a woman or a non white man. Them's the facts!

Should there a miracle and BO gets elected, I would bet my bottom dollar that he doesn't see out his term! Some rabid republican will see to that.

Anyway, can you tell me what policy differences there are between the candidates? Not heresay or smears but real policy differences?

Will either of the candidates help out the man in the street as opposed to big business?

Will either of them stop supporting terrorists?

Oh, and by the way. I see Palin shared a platform and agreed with a seccessionist movement in Alaska. Can anyone tell me what would happen if a state democratically voted to leave the union? Would that democratic vote be upheld by the US government or would they send in the troops and kill everyone who dares to vote to leave the union?

"..bumped into each other on the street.." - Aye, pull the other one. You judge a person by the company he keeps.

Ayers is an unrepentant radical with whom Obama has recent and significant involvement (google Annenberg Foundation/ Obama for starters). He launched his political career at Ayers' house, Ayers appointed him to his only executive position to date, as chairman of an organisation called "Chicago Annenberg Challenge".

This guy's life is full of mysteries , where McCain's is an open book. I wonder what other skeletons he has in the cupboard 5 weeks before an important Election.

Sarah Palin was a remarkable and accomplished governor before she was nominated as a Republican veep, she was the MOST popular governor in the country with 78% approval. Now the media and democrats portray her as scum of the earth.

Obama has always been a questionable candidate who rose out of Chicago politics. He used Acorn tactics and removed any opponents to fix his race for state senator by being the only democrat on the ballot in a democrat area.
Acorn has lots of legal problems, and Obama worked for them- yet we can't talk about that either as we risk being called racists.
(Another topic the media can't and won't investigate.)

redneck. Pregnant unmarried daughter and 2 sons, so desperate to get away from her, they join the army.

Her ignorance of the main issues is laugh out loud ludicrous. Americans, on the whole, are not as stupid as to believe that this woman could some how take over from "Old man" maverick McCain and lead America on the world stage.

The World wide ridicule Americans suffered after electing the "idiot son" for a second time, is not something sane Americans want to repeat.

Palin can be sent out to spew her spittle flying garbage as often as the republicans like, but it wont make a dam bit of difference to the outcome. Expect these pathetic attacks to get even cruder as the Redneck pinup moves into overdrive. Yeeeeeeeeeeeeehaaaaa.

The dollar is sure looking strong against your EU.
I assume you're going to run to the bank and stand in line to be sure your paycheck clears? Maybe you should move where they have coal and wood and you could ride a bike to work, because if things continue in Europe, you won't have gas or oil or a job.

Sarah Palin, if you didn't know, is an expert on energy.
The president of Iceland asked her advice.
Maybe Germany should get in line and ask too.

There are many in the US who believe one of the reasons the country is in this financial melt-down is because we out-sourced our energy. We can't afford it and we shouldn't be buying energy from terrorists.

Palin will get the US out of that self-destructive energy melt-down.

Pallid, paltry Palin is a joke.

She and her Republican co-conspirators are "running scared" because of the gross incompetence of BabyBush and his wacky Cabinet and how they may have ruined the world's economy.

$875 billion and counting! This is grotesque and if those Republicans pitch the world into a depression it will demonstrate that BabyBush is the STUPIDEST US President EVER and his Cabinet a bunch of incompetent and greedy nitwits.

So, pistol-packin' Palin hopefully will go back to Alaska and murder more moose in her SUV and continue to utter totally incomprehensible pronouncements to the media that have no subject or verb or sane reasons for being inarticulately uttered.

Saturday Night Live and the actress who portrays her has that woman down pat and does Stupid Sarah realise that just by opening her mouth her mental incompetence increases daily?

What a woman - and I DO NOT mean that as a compliment.

America is going down the tube like never before. When the dust settles there will be no more huge idiotic cars, houses stapled together with balsa wood, or cinema sized tv screens, because your banks have no money. Americans will have to live within their meager means, and hope no one in their families needs to see a doctor, ever. yeah, where do I sign up for that ?.

Keep an eye on your dollar, because very soon it will begin to fall, only this time, it won't stop. Personally, I have yet to feel any effects. my bank (Sparkasse) is not suffering in the slightest.

"Palin is an expert on energy" (GASP).

Out sourcing your energy has caused this financial meltdown ?. And there was the entire population of the planet thinking it was the sub-prime mortgage scandal.

"Shouldn't be buying energy from terrorists" . Then stop trading with Saudi Arabia, as it was they who attacked you on 9/11. No wait.. I forgot .. your commander in chief's Daddy is a major business partner of the Bin laden Family.

Sarah Palin wrongs women - in a wink
There’s no doubt anymore: Sarah Palin is an affirmative action embarrassment
I guess standards are scraping the bottom of the barrel; that they’ve decided mental mediocrity is good enough for a vice president in 2008.
Hillary Clinton has more brains in her baby fingernail than Sarah Palin has head to foot.
Her style would go over great debating for student council.
But in a person who could be president? It’s just weird, childish, silly, even patronizing, as if we voters are third-graders ourselves. And that relentless chipperness, real or faux?
Imagine other local female politicians winking at anybody, even once, in a debate. Attorney General Martha Coakley? Former Lt. Gov. Kerry Healey? Suffolk Sheriff Andrea Cabral? No, I don’t think so. The difference between these women and Palin is clear: They are serious, thoughtful, analytical, sophisticated - good qualities, in case we’ve forgotten. They could name you a Supreme Court decision without panicking. And they’d never, ever pretend hockey-momming has anything to do with running the world.

Everyone and anyone can knock Sarah Palin and call her anything filthy they can invent. I don't care. What matters is that the democrats are pushing a Marxist to power. They would rather surrender their country to a Marxist than lose the presidency. That's the tragedy.

Mike in 41:

I only asked a question about why Nixon was never exposed for his PRescott Bush association. Prescott Bush played a big role in Nixon's becoming a politician, a key role. Prescott Bush recruited Nixon into politics. and Prescott Bush was actually helping the NAZIs during WW2, summer of 1942 an undercover US Army intelligence officer met with Bush, and Bush was trying to get things for the NAZIs to help their factories during the war. Bush was also laundering money for them that supported their US operations. That is a pretty big deal. Ayers & Obama were only social acquaintances as they travelled in same political & social circles from what I understand.

Regarding your comparison to JFK - the senior Kennedy, Joe Kennedy, did support the NAZIs during the 1930's. But in 1939 after invasion of Poland he denounced them is my understanding and ceased all association. Bush did not do that. Even after the US entered the war he was actively aiding them here in the US and trying to help their war efforts. Prescott Bush was arrested shortly after US soldiers first fought German soldiers in north africa.

Come to think of it why was Prescott Bush never held accountable for what he did. The man was elected to the US Senate from Connecticut in 1952. Why were the American people never told by the mass media about this man's activities during WW2. There was only one newspaper in America that even covered his arrest in 1942. They called him 'Hitlers Angel' in america. Documents from the National Archives confirm that US federal prosecutor named O'Neil did have him arrested and did have a strong case against him per the law. But Prescott Bush was released from jail a month or so after being arrested and never put on trial. He ratted out low-level NAZIs and was able to walk free. and thats nothing. Also in 1942 several others were arrested for collaborating with the NAZIs. one was Dulles, Dulles after being released from jail without put on t

A vacation is on the cards soon, however in the meantime I'll be relaxing in my courtyard garden overlooking the divine Sydney harbour living a life of luxury eating king prawns and lobster while you're living in a tent somewhere in the midst of your republican generated depression that will only get worse with McCain and bimbo Palin running amok. LOL

A poll of more than 17,000 people, conducted in 17 countries, has confirmed the world clearly wants the Democrat nominee to be installed as the 44th president of the United States.
The Reader's Digest poll included the views of 1,000 Australians, of which 76 per cent said they would like see Senator Obama win next month's presidential election.

Only 10 per cent of Australians surveyed said they preferred Republican nominee John McCain.

Since when is telling the truth talking down? Why can't you post facts to back up your assumptions? Your posts go in circles, but avoid any substance. If you want to blame the republicans, then do it with facts. Disprove that Fannie and Freddie are the root of the problem. Disprove that the democrats voted against senate bill s 190 that would have reformed Fannie/Freddie. Find your facts and then post them. Its a pretty simple process really.

Fair assesment. But, you need to take into account that on the US political scale Hillary was perceived to be more of a centrist than Obama. (Hillary was actually raised in a republican household) Obama, on the other hand has only moved toward the center because it is politically expedient. His actual voting record shows him to be wayyyyyyyyyy to the left. Taking this into account, I could see why many democrats feel uncomfortable with his domestic policies.
86

Sandi,

San Diego 06/10/2008 22:08:09
#87 Cutty Sark,

Had Obama actually BEEN elected as the nominee of the Democratic Pary, more of us MIGHT be supporting him. However, he was not elected as the nominee. Neither he nor Hillary Clinton won enough pledged delegates to automatically become the party's nominee, although Hillary did get more votes. So the decision would be made by superdelegates who only vote at the party convention. The Obama campaign, Nancy Pelosi, Howard Dean, Harry Reid, Donna Brazile and other members of the DNC bullied and threatened Superdelegates to endorse Obama in early June, rather than wait until the convention in late August. Up until they vote at the convention, SDs can change their mind as often as they want. In other words, the only thing that counts as far as the SDs are concerned is their vote at the convention.
