Published Date: 23 August 2008
BARACK Obama named veteran politician Joe Biden as his running mate for the US presidential election today, his campaign confirmed.
Mr Biden, who chairs the US Senate's Foreign Relations Committee and has three decades of experience, will help the Obama campaign challenge the frequent criticism that it lacks foreign policy experience.

Democratic hopeful Obama's choice of the 65-year-old Delaware senator as his vice presidential nominee was officially confirmed by a text message to supporters this morning as his campaign continues to embrace technology to garner support.

The announcement comes ahead of the Democratic Party's national convention in Denver, Colorado, next week, where Mr Obama is likely to be officially nominated as the party's presidential nominee.

Mr Biden will help strengthen the 46-year-old Illinois senator's foreign policy credentials.

Other potential vice presidential nominees, including Virginia governor Tim Kaine and Indiana senator Evan Bayh could have helped deliver a certain set of voters, or reinforce Mr Obama's message of change.

Mr Biden will now make a speech at the convention on Tuesday, but most US pundits agree that vice presidential candidates do not swing elections.

Mr Obama's two-month search for a running mate was conducted almost entirely in secret.

His Republican rival John McCain is expected to name his vice presidential nominee next week. Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney are reportedly among those being considered.

Gaffe-prone Mr Biden is known for being talkative and is prone to making statements which get him in to trouble.

Last year, as a Democratic presidential hopeful, he said Mr Obama was "not yet ready" for the presidency, a remark which will now be seized upon by the Republican attack machine ahead of the general election on November 4.

Even before Mr Obama confirmed his selection this morning, McCain campaign spokesman Ben Porritt said: "There has been no harsher critic of Barack Obama's lack of experience than Joe Biden.

"Biden has denounced Barack Obama's poor foreign policy judgment and has strongly argued in his own words what Americans are quickly realising – that Barack Obama is not ready to be president."

Mr Biden, who dropped out of the presidential race in Iowa in January, is of Irish Catholic heritage but is in favour of abortion rights, a key issue in American elections.

He originally voted to authorise the war in Iraq, but has since become a persistent critic of the Bush administration's policies there.

Born in a working class family in Scranton, Pennsylvania, on November 20 1942, Mr Biden is not a household name, but was arguably the most well-known of those being considered by Mr Obama.

He first ran for the US Senate when he was 29 years old.

He was also the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee during two of the most contentious Supreme Court nomination battles of the past 50 years.

He led the opposition to the nominations of Robert H Bork, who was defeated, and Clarence Thomas, who was later confirmed.

Mr Biden married Neilia Hunter in 1966 and the couple had three children.

But his wife and 13-month-old daughter Naomi died in a car accident on December 18 1972, shortly after he was first elected to the US Senate.

His two sons, Joseph R "Beau" Biden III and Robert Hunter, were seriously injured, but Mr Biden was persuaded not to resign to look after them and was sworn into office from their bedside.

Both have since made full recoveries.

In 1977 he married Jill Tracy Jacobs, with whom he has one daughter Ashley, and he continues to commute 90-minutes each day from his home in the Wilmington suburbs to Washington, DC.

In an email to supporters, Mr Obama wrote: "Joe and I will appear for the first time as running mates this afternoon in Springfield, Illinois – the same place this campaign began more than 19 months ago.

"I'm excited about hitting the campaign trail with Joe, but the two of us can't do this alone.

"We need your help to keep building this movement for change."

A good choice. It balances the ticket.Let·s hope Obama weathers the right wing media tirade better than Al Gore or John Kerry.
However if the US ended up with George W twice (by fair means or foul)I suppose anything is possible this time.

Hillary did not have any real experience either other than being married to a bad President. Since Obama is so inexperienced and is not capable of being a small town mayor he needed someone with experience like Bidden.

He should have picked Sam Nunn. Bidden like Obama ia a racist, Bidden said you can't go into a 7-11 convenient store without the guy behind the counter having an indian accent. Bidden was also caught plagiarizing a lot of material during a previous run for the Presidency and lying about it.

John Kerry is a far left wing lieral elitists that is out of touch who holds his sandwich between his thumb and pinky or did you forgot about that one? He also put himself in for a purple heart for a scratch that required a banaid.

The radical left was use to having the media 100% in bed with them for so long that now they label un biased fair and balanced media as "Right Wing". They only like one sided coverage supporting their views. They are so warped they think MSNBC, The NY Times, and CNN are fair!

here is an interview that Joe Biden gave in 2007 to an Israeli media outlet.

http://www.erichufschmid.net/TFC/Shalom-interview-Senator-Biden.html

I remember Biden for his plagiarism incident in 1988. He gave a dramatic speech that was plainly stolen from a British politician. Biden & Obama both as well as McCain are US Senators. The Senate is the place where nobody is a radical, nobody is a rebel, everyone is establishment yes-man.

I'm amazed at people on this board trying to throw mud based on liberal-conservative paradigm. Almost all of our leaders are against us. our media distracts us & confuses us. among our political leaders of both parties, they all follow almost exactly the same agenda in reality.

Here's an example. Our presidential candidates fawn over Israel. But the American people wish they would not do that and want America to be neutral between Israel and Israel's enemies.

I think Biden picked the short straw. Why would Obama pick someone who has said publicly that they don't think Obama is ready for prime time? This isn't going to help Obama win. Biden's state, Delaware, has three electoral votes and they always go to a Democrat.

The whole stupid texting thing was so the Obama campaign could get all those cell phone numbers for GOTV in late October/November. So if you got a text this morning, expect a call soon. (GOTV is "get out the vote")

All Obama needs to know about American foreign policy is that he has to carry out the will of the Knesset at all times. He will be closely monitored by the Knessete's controlling agents in America, AIPAC!

So far he has done well in his display of humility and submission by publically grovelling in front of AIPAC and swearing allegiance to Israel and undertaking to defend Israel before swearing to defend the USA!

Enough said!!!

To recover its sovereignty and independence from Israel the USA will have to begin a second revolutionary war. Israel will not grant America independence without a protracted and bitter war!!!

Wally,

Gere is right in 16 that America is a captive nation. I don't know if Israel is the captor or not, but I do know that the people who rule us are not loyal to us. And they give an inordinate attention to the Israeli zionists.

I'm disappointed in Obama's choice because Biden is a man that is challenged in the honesty department. As I said above, the plagiarism incident in 1988 speaks loudly. Since then he's told public lies about himself. A man like that is not really fit.

But what else is new? We've had nothing but liars and scoundrels in the White House for 20 years now.

while I am not thrilled with Obama, I do like Biden. Perhaps a Hillary/Biden ticket might be better? Who knows? IF I VOTE, Biden will be the deciding factor, not Obama. Biden is more middle class than most pols. He takes the train home almost daily from DC to his home in Delaware to be with his family-who he obviously cares a lot for. when he took the oath of office the first time, it was taken by his sons hospital bedside (wife and daughter died in the car crash), He is NO MORE Ra racist than most people. He just isn't "politically correct" and tells it as he sees it--UNLIKE most of the phonies in DC that fool elected.

The Amtrak trains run very quickly from Union Station to his huge "Compound" estate in Wilmington Delaware. He probably gets home much quicker than some of the Senators that have homes in Suburban Virginia. He rides first class on Amtrak, it's a Government run train service here in the states and Joe is an advocate for them.

I've been to DC and Union Station and it's next to the US Senate. I've been watching the coverage this morning and Joe the racist plagiarist must have servants that pick him up at the Amtrak station. He has a huge multi million dollar estate, I wonder why the Liberals don't complain about the energy he consumes with those mansions or SUV's?

The "liberal" media doesn't post anything nasty about The One. Why would this be any different?

It is of some interest that Biden's son Beau, who is the one now in Iraq with the National Guard, is the Attorney-General of Delaware and had Larry Sinclair arrested on trumped-up charges.

D-945 in 20,22:

I agree with your Biden comments. But regarding the video Moreen put up - thats been around for months even over half a year related stories have been circulating. I knew about it a long time ago and put up a couple of links on this site showing it.

There's beent he Larry Sinclair accusations, the Reverend Manning accusations. There's been the America Free Press story. There's quite a scandal going accusing Obama of having homosexual relations with some including members of that church he went to, drug use too. And AFP's article implies 3 people were murdered to cover up.

Listen - I'm not going to suggest these accusations are true, they've been pretty well discredited in most people's eyes. But it is odd that in American politics we have these types of things happening.

You want to have a laugh, look for Reverend Manning's YouTube videos.

I've tried to tell you that in America the propaganda machine is very loud and very powerful as well. The people that rule America are very good at what they do. The US military is very good, much more powerful than commonly known.

Propaganda like this is a distraction, it creates confusion, noise, grudges that keep people loyal to the 2-party fraud by hating the other half of that partnership. There is an endless array of garbage like this given us that keeps us from possibly finding important and relevant stories.

In as much as George W. Bush picked a strong military and foreign policy expert,in Dick Cheney, to balance his lack of experience, The Messiah followed those footsteps and picked a hawk and foreign policy expert in Biden to balance his lack of experience.

It looks like another Cheney Term with a hawk Whitehouse. Europe should be very happy.

On the bright side, it appears that The Great One ignored his wife and listened to Caroline Kennedy. This is a good thing:)

I heard Biden's son has not left for Iraq yet. He is a Captain 0-3 in the Army National Guard and is a Lawyer in the Guard and he has been kept back until things became more safe. Even when he does go over he is a Lawyer so it's not like he will see any action.

Biden's son will be Like Al Gore Sr's son Al Gore Jr. Al Gore Jr. was a Newspaper reporter for Stars & Stripes and a driver for a General and never came close to any action, his father the Senator saw to it.

Biden's son volunteering to go over in the near future is a political move.

Speaking only for myself, I admire Hillary very much as a brilliant, successful woman. However, I want her for president because she is brilliant, knows policy in great depth-and the reasons for said policy, is empathetic, works very hard, will fight for her position on issues, and listens to her constituents. Being a woman comes after all that.

My forecast in the recent past on these forums that Obhama will never become president of the USA no matter how good or bad he and his supporters claim him to be is being further reinforced by every day current events.
Who really believes for one moment that those who have been in CONTROL of the political power for generations in Yankeeland are going to suddenly relinquish it too such a radical as Obhama?
I certainly don't!

Joe Biden is an unlikable guy with a strong record as a loser on the national scene. For those not familiar with him you will soon look at those pre-Biden days with fondness. He is an irritating person who once brazenly plagiarized part of a speech by a British politician. I can't think of who it was so perhaps the British readers can help us. Is there a politician that intones how his father was a miner? Who ever that is, Joe Biden, whose father never got near a coal mine, copied that part word for word. I think plagiarizer is a specialized word for thief.

You don't? Well, La Ti Da! And you are? Oh, by the way, Yankeeland is the Bronx. If you don't know instantly what that means, you know nothing about America.

And as for those who do the 'controlling,' they certainly have an eclectic view of whom they put in office. What do D.D. Eisenhower, JFK, Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, Clinton, and the Bushes have in common, all of whom were foisted on unsuspecting and ignorant American citizens by these 'controllers' of yours?!?!?!

Well, nothing. Each of these men are unalike in policy and social views as it is possible to get. Controllers, indeed!

For those on the other side of the pond, in the US "yankees" are people who live in the northern parts of the US (although many have since relocated to the hospitable south). The term originated from the civil war, when people were either yankees (union) or rebels (confederacy).
42

Wally,

By The Rivers Of Babylon (USA) 25/08/2008 01:55:17
SouthernGent:

the term 'yankee' did not originate in the civil war. it was in use 150-200 years prior. It was used to describe American especially in the revolutionary war when the wonderful song 'yankee doodle dandee' was sung as defiance.

The term 'american' also came into use prior to 1700 and was used to describe americans.

and in modern times people around the world have for many decades used the term 'yankee' to describe Americans. in decades past its gained a bit of a negative connotation as people shouted 'yankee go home' sometimes.

You are correct though that southerners in the civil war used the term yankee derisively about their northern foes. and in domestic america the term is 1 of 2 things, 1 - either people from all the states north of 'mason-dixon' line used to divide the states during the civil war or 2 - people from New England which are the east coast states north of New York.
