BARACK Obama is to reveal his choice as potential US vice-president in an e-mail and text message to supporters, his campaign said yesterday.
The Democrats' White House hopeful, whose campaign has embraced new media technologies, will send out an alert to supporters as soon as the decision is made.

Mr Obama, 47, faces the Republican John McCain, 71, who has admitted he has difficultie
s using computers, in November's general election, which will decide who will be the 44th president of the United States.

In an e-mail to supporters, David Plouffe, Mr Obama's campaign manager, wrote: "Barack Obama is about to make one of the most important decisions of this campaign – choosing a running mate.

"You have helped build this movement from the bottom up, and Barack wants you to be the first to know his choice.

"Sign up today to be the first to know.

"Once you've signed up, please forward this e-mail to your friends, family and co-workers to let them know about this special opportunity. No other campaign has done this before. You can be part of this important moment.

"Be the first to know who Barack selects as his running mate."

The electronic sign-up sheet also appeared to be an effort to expand the campaign's electronic mailing list ahead of the general election.

The Obama campaign set fundraising records earlier this year during the US primary election season, in part through its use of new media technologies.

Mr Obama, who is on holiday in Hawaii this week, is expected to reveal his choice as running mate before the party's national convention begins in Denver, Colorado, on 25 August.

What's the big deal about McCain having difficulties using computers? I doubt whether that is in the job description for president. In any event, whoever gets the job will have plenty of underlings to work computers for them.

Guga,

the news here is so ridiculous, and dumbed down. You have to sift thru the bs, and second guess/read thru the lines of most of what is being said.

Personally, I wouldn't sign up to receive his notice designating who he chooses. I am still trying to figure out who is sending BO money from overseas? ($2.8 million) I wonder if any of this money is from Arab countries? Are any of them known commonly as Al Qaeda, Hezbollah, etc? I am sorry, but I for one do not trust this man!

He is the most liberal left wing politician on Capital Hill. His politcal voting record reflects a man who is in favor of Infanticide, legitimizing homosexaulity, higher taxes, more control of the masses, and certainly lacks the intelligence and experience to run a small business, let alone a world power.

I fail to see the attraction this man has for the masses who seem to favor him. He is a liar, a counterfeit christian, has a history of dirty politics when working for the political machinery of mayor Daly in Chicago, "fip flops" on every major issue, and the only time you can tell that he's lying is when his lips are moving.

I certainly would not want to see this man become "commander in chief" of this nation. He would hand over our security to the terrorists or become so duped by their lies and gestures of peace that his foreign policy would doubtless jeopardise our national security. His politcis will, if elected, undermine the weakened state of our economy. How can people be so gullable and blind as to think that this man can manage the multi faceted problems that face this nation and the world? He;'s just another smoothe talking, double tongued politician who is far more dangerous to the well being of this nation than any president we've seen thus far, with the exception of Bill and Hillary Clinton.

That would probably be his best chance for getting elected.

I doubt BO will pick Hillary...

1) Hillary carries a BOATLOAD of baggage, WJC for one, there is STILL a WHOLE lot of "clinton fatigue" in the USofA... she is a polarizing figure...

2) there was a lot of "nicey-nice" talk 2 months ago, when Hillary backed out, mostly about how BO was going to help retire her campaign debt... very little of that has actually happened

3) while #2 is on BO, the entire blame doesnt fall on HIS shoulders, Hillary hasnt exactly worn out the campaign trail stumping for BO... and in fact has made SEVERAL faux-pas-es by either not mentioning BO... or mentioning him in not such a great light...

BO's problem is, HE has to go first, so McCain can sit back and counter-punch whatever BO chooses...

if BO chooses Hillary, McCain can go with a woman himself, Sarah Palin, the Governor of Alaska.... or Christine Todd Whitman, or even Condy Rice... all pretty powerful characters in their own rights.

if BO chooses Richardson, McCain can go with one of the above, or go with Romney, or Bobby Jindal, or Charlie Crist... (Romney's problem is he is as stiff as AlBore... Jindal, he is Y O U N G, at 37, but VERY appealing to the ultra conservatives... and Charlie Crist, would be the "2 wrinkly white haired guys"... even though Crist is only 53)

GOP women would be a VERY interesting choices for #2, MOST significantly they would be able to counterpunch the shrill DNC mantra of "a GOP vote means Roe v Wade is dead"... especially if BO takes a male running mate... they would all be able to state their party's reasoning for their positions without being silenced because of their gender.... and anyone trying to shut them down risks appearing to be a "bully"... which is what sunk AlBore...

Obama choose Clinton ? no way on earth. The amount of baggage that woman and her stupid husband have attached to them , make them way too risky to deal with.
#1 Guga . No of course it's no problem that McCain is technologically ignorant. This to go with his horrific admission that he knows next to nothing about economics!. "Which button should I push ?". What are all these flashing lights, help help !. Not surprising when you see his academic record is right down there with the "Idiot Son".

The world continues to be amazed that this dithering old man could possibly be in the running to become your leader. Is he really the best you could come up with ? or is he just the easiest to remember.

#3 Combatvet; I wonder if you took my advice and visited "Vietnam veterans against john mcCain". I am prepared to wager you have not.

See no evil, hear no evil, Say no evil . Is that how it is in your country?

#7-six-Mccain doesnt have to know how to use a computer to understand economics. The big boss where I work knows email--that's it! But, she does know how to read spread sheets.

#4-boy wonder-He'll have to ignore billarys inter-office memos that have just become public knowledge.

#7 Number 6:

As I have previously stated....I do not find either Obama or McCain appealing choices for the office they seek. The lesser of two evils of course would be McCain. I would much prefer having a spot on the ballot which says; "NONE OF THE ABOVE"...and if the majority of voters checked it (2/3rds) then they would have to start all over, where no one would be elected.

I totally agree with you, and I quote; "Is he really the best you could come up with ?" I would change it somewhat..."Are these two candidates the best America could come up with?" If they are, there is little doubt that we are in real deep poo poo.

Actually, I would like to know who thought that these two hayseeds would be Senatorial material, not to mention their obvious lack of qualifications to become another "Temporary Resident of the WHite House"? I know that you or I would be a much better choice for the Office, but some times I have my doubts about your qualifications.

Ugh, you are most assuredly correct in that conclusuion. The man cheated on his wife, lied about it to the WORLD, yeah...you could say that he has about as much of a chance as a snow ball in hell! But, on the other hand, there's enough idiots in this country who seem to be swooning over Obama "the messiah" (a little sarcasm), that Edwards even looks good to me for a passing moment. A very breif passing moment.

I never cared for his politics before he got caught with his wick trick, and even less now. He not only bedded her, he channeled over $114,000 of our tax money into her business of making videos of him. Wonder if she got any bedroom shots?

This is far more important news than reporting on the new Scottish poll from YouGov. ....NOT!

http://www.yougov.com/uk/archives/pdf/SNP_website.pdf

YouGov poll, commissioned by the SNP, conducted 6-8 August, sample 1,028.
Scottish Parliament constituency vote [change from May 2007 in brackets]:

SNP: 44% [+11]
Labour: 25% [-7]
Lib Dem: 14% [-2]
Con: 13% [-4]
Other: 4% [+2]

Applying these figures to the Weber Shandwick Scotland Votes model, the SNP would win 58 of Scotland's 73 Holyrood first-past-the-post seats.
SNP - 58 constituency seats (plus 37)
Labour - 8 constituency seats (minus 29)
LibDems - 6 constituency seats (minus 5)
Tories - 1 constituency seat (minus 3)

According the Scotland Votes predictor, 44% constituency vote would give the SNP 58 seats.

In the last election, all of the major parties lost an average of 2% to the minor parties with the Greens getting about half of the minor party vote in the regional lists vote.

Using the constituency vote minus 2% for the major parties and Greens with half of the minor party vote, the regional list could be expected to be similar to this and the totals to this

Scottish Parliament (129 seats)
73 Const. seats, 56 Reg seats, majority is 65 total

Party (Reg) (Const) (Total)

SNP 42 (6)(58) (64)
Labour 23 (24) (8) (32)
LibDem 12 (9) (6) (15)
Tories 11 (12) (1) (13)
Green 6 (5) (0) (5)
Others 6 (0) (0) (0)

It is currently showing the SNP one seat short of an overall majority. With currently one independent, Margo McNab, a former SNP member, could that single vote be the difference?
