Clinton wants to move the winning post in last-gasp bid to run in White House race

HILLARY Clinton yesterday launched what is likely to be the final gambit of her primary campaign, calling for the disqualified states of Florida and Michigan to be counted in the primary process.

Following her big victory in West Virginia this week she wants the Democratic Party's rules and bylaws committee, which meets at the end of the month, to reinstate the banned states.

Both states had their primary elections, won by Mrs Clinton, r
uled invalid by the Democratic Party after the dates of the elections were changed.

Clinton staff hope that once the ban is lifted, cutting the lead of Barack Obama, Mrs Clinton can persuade party-appointed superdelegates to give the nomination to her.

"I have absolutely no doubt that the Democratic National Committee is going to seat Florida and Michigan," said Mrs Clinton's communications director Howard Wolfson. "I think she'll become the nominee."

But as the primary campaign begins to wind down, few outside Mrs Clinton's inner circle appear to believe she can still pull it off.

As significant as Mrs Clinton's West Virginia victory was, the news that Mr Obama has pulled ahead for the first time in the race to win endorsements for super delegates: 283 to 269. Including delegates won in West Virginia and new superdelegates, Mr Obama has a total of 1,886 delegates to Mrs Clinton's 1,718.

Even staunch Clinton supporters have begun switching sides. One top backer, James Carville, who made headlines last month by declaring the New Mexico governor, Bill Richardson, a "Judas" for supporting Mr Obama, this week told the New York Times he was making the change too, saying: "Everybody is going to be with Obama."

And last night, NARAL Pro-Choice America, a leading abortion rights advocacy organisation that has supported Mrs Clinton throughout her political career, said that it was backing Mr Obama.

Party insiders say that with Mr Obama leading in elected delegates, superdelegates, the popular vote and the number of states won, the rules committee is unlikely to change the game in favour of Mrs Clinton.

"Thirty-eight members of that committee, except for those from Florida and Michigan, voted for the rules the first time; they are not going to change things now," said Phil Noble, a Democratic Party polling expert.

The Obama campaign is taking no chances, and is launching a gambit of its own – trying to wrap up the contest before the committee even meets by getting the crucial 2,026 delegates.

Such a win would make it more difficult, politically, for the rules committee to make changes if Mr Obama's supporters are already holding victory parties.

Adding to Mrs Clinton's woes are reports that her campaign, despite a personal finance injection of £5.5 million, is now £10 million in debt.

With five more contests to go and Mrs Clinton insisting "the race isn't over yet", Terry McAuliffe, her chief finance officer, said the senator is preparing to dip into her own funds again to keep the campaign alive.

But even Mrs Clinton may be considering her options, with her speeches showing her no longer criticising her rival, but offering faint praise. "I want to commend Senator Obama and his supporters," she told her victory rally in West Virginia.

Mr Obama, meanwhile, is presenting himself as looking beyond the nomination contest.

His campaign stops this week are in states vital not to the primary race, but to the battle with Republican John McCain.

"This is a state where we will compete to win when I am the Democratic nominee," he said, dropping the "if" for a categorical "when" as he spoke to garment workers in Missouri.

Other signs of a change in style are his decision to wear a stars-and-stripes lapel pin. Previously, he had insisted the pin, also worn by George Bush, the president, was a gimmick. But as he tries to reach out to the all- important swing voters and moderate Republicans, it seems to be a gimmick he is now prepared to deploy.

Tuesday provided fresh signs that the Republicans are vulnerable. Travis Childers, a Democrat, was elected to fill a vacant Congress seat that had been in Republican hands for 14 years in the conservative, southern state of Mississippi.

It was the third seat in the House of Representatives the Democrats have taken from Republicans this year, and it boosts their hopes of expanding their majorities in both chambers of Congress in November, as well as winning the presidency.

Any way you cut the cake, the U.S. is in big trouble come November. I cannot fathom a country with over 3 billion citizens could not come up with better candidates than these 3. Scares the s*** out of me for our future.

John Edwards just endorsed Obama in a televised speech. no doubt sent by party leaders to do so.

Hilary may be campaigning now for 2012. She may become a caricature, like Ted Kennedy, always running, never winning. Everybody's sick of the clintons.

It seem that the American Democrats are to pick the style over the substance. Clinton is far the abler candidate who has picked up the votes of those who would most likely shift to McCain.- the white working class male. It reminds me of when they selected McGovern over Hubert Humphrey and what happened? The Republicans got in with a landslide. Hillary Clinton has won all the major industrial estates bar one. These will be the battleground states of the November election. And is it not that winner takes it all in the electoral college that selects the president. If it had been winner takes all the delegates in the primaries what would have been the effect? Clinton took California, NY, Texas, Pennsylvania. A lot of republicans were backing Obama so they can demolish him in November. Hillary would have been a tougher nut to crack. Mark my words the Democrats will pick Obama but it will be McCain who wins the presidency. Young idealistic voters who have tipped the result to Obama have a lot to learn in the real world. I think if Obama had become VP to Hillary, he would have had a clear run-in in 4 years time. I think Hillary might only have done the one term. But we will never find out if Obama would have been a good president. He didn't have the patience to get some experience under his belt.

Hunty Loon: we don't have industrial states any more. The people who rule us shipped most of our industry to China. They make a lot of money on it. We have a 'service' economy now. Our main industry is finance. Without all the massive lending to our people and our companies and our government we'd have been in a depression years ago. Today our banking system increases our money supply by 25% of gdp per year. its all financed by the people around the world who still value our dollar as being worth something. Note the dollar's been firming up lately. and note also that the main decline of the dollar in recent years has been against the euro.

I'm sure the people who you vote for, not rule you, did not ship jobs over to China. I'm sure it had to do with high taxes in the US and it was the owners/CEOs who decided to send jobs to China.

Nobody sent any jobs anywhere. Unemployment in the US has been between 4 and 5 percent for the past ten years. That is nearing full employment. So, what's the problem?
9

Wally,

By The Rivers Of Babylon (USA) 15/05/2008 05:11:37
Deuchars in #6; if you want to be ignorant, that is your choice. In 1993 the US made an arrangement with China to transfer industry from America to China. This was achieved by the currency fix. This is a system whereby the chinese currency is fixed at an artificially low exchange value to the US dollar. Because both countries agreed to it, the currencies do not float and china's currency was held artificially low to the dollar by this peg between 1993 to 2005. By the early 2000's a wide consensus among economists developed that the chinese yuan was as a result valued at 40% under market value to the dollar and the dollar thus valued 40% over what market rates would've delivered. This made everything the chinese sold to the US 40% cheaper than it otherwise would be. It also made everything the US sold to china be 40% over what it otherwise would've been. This naturally resulted in many factories shutting down in the US and moving to china. George Bush's uncle Prescott was living in China and the chairman of the US-China chamber of commerce at the time when this deal was orchestrated. US businesses profited massively from moving their operations to china and exporting to the world as a result of this.

In 2005 the agreement was modified. China's currency now is fixed to a basket of currencies and allowed to float slightly. But the end-result is still the same in that it is not at market value, it is under-valued by mutual agreement. Thus favoring china's production over the production of other nations.

Wally,

By The Rivers Of Babylon (USA) 15/05/2008 05:18:10
King Nimrod in #8: the US stopped measuring unemployment in 1993. For 125 years prior to 1993 the US measured its unemployment rate each month by selecting a demographically representative sample of the population each month and intensively studying that sample to see what percentage of the people both were looking for a job and did not have a job. This percentage was called the unemployment rate. The US stopped measuring the unemployment rate in 1993. Recently people have asked the government how it comes up with what it calls the 'unemployment rate' today and the government has declined to tell how it arrives at this figure it releases each month. But the Wall Street Journal in 1993 stated that the unemployment rate would no longer be measured by the US government each month due to a shortage of funds.

On a related matter in 2000 69% of all adults in the US aged 21-65 had jobs. Today 62% have jobs.

Manufacturing jobs in the US have historically paid a wage higher than what the average job pays. The average manufacturing job might pay $19/hour while the average non-manufacturing job might pay $13/hour. By shifting our jobs from manufacturing to services we were voluntarilly lowering our own wages. As the good manufacturing jobs were shipped to china the economy experienced a negative trend from the multiplier effect. As jobs went down those employees could not spend their paychecks in the economy and thus the negative effects were multiplied.

It is only massive borrowing that has made up the difference because the jobs were shipped to China as I explained above.

the latest news is more interesting - the DNC announced on Wednesday that it had signed agreements with both campaigns to begin raising money together

They are obviously preparing the ground for Clinton to exit with some dignity. Most obvious time would be after next week's votes in Kentucky and Oregon - both are likely to cancel each other out and the way superdelegates are going Obama may not be far short of actually claiming victory.

Wally,

Deuchars in #6 - you've such faith in democracy. Perhaps Hermann Goering could instruct you.

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country."

~ Nazi Reichsmarschall Hermann Goering

There's hardly any difference between the 3 candidates we have left. That is because the people who rule us prefer that policy mix that they each advocate. But as Ron Paul said Obama is slightly better than the others as he has differentiated himself slightly from the others in the direction of the people's will. Remember, that the democrats have arranged their affairs so that the Michigan & Florida primaries were not run fairly and yet the democrat leaders can decide whether to count those delegates or not and thus they may be able to throw the nomination to Clinton. We'll have to wait & see.

I am amazed at the mediocrity of the people contributing on this board, people from both sides of the Atlantic.

Number 6 of Germany,

Your favorite, Mr. Obama, favors the war in Afghanistan, he favors expanding that war to Pakistan, he's spoken favorably of attacking Iran, he favors the war in Somalia, he favors the persecution of the Palestinians by Israel, a war by proxy in fact, and he's said he wants to keep the permanent bases in Iraq to use them as a platform to attack other countries in the region. All of these positions that he's taken he did so that the power brokers who have allowed him to be presented on our tv as a prominent person would do so. These are things that have made him crooked.

It's not publicised because the major media has fawned over Obama since he appeared on the national political scene. Had they done their job and looked into his background, he would not be in the position he is today. The DNC also should have looked into his background before foisting him on us. While his activities in Chicago might be acceptable in the murky world of Chicago politics, they are completely unacceptable for a president of the United States.

To take the Ayers connection further, Ayers has visited Venezuela at least four times, meeting with, and supporting, Chavez. Ayers has also expressed support for FARC in Colombia and Hamas. Obama fired an advisor just a few days ago because the advisor had held many meetings with Hamas. You won't have heard much about that either.

John Edwards, whom I supported until he dropped out of the race a few months ago, has made a very bad choice. On the day after the primary in the poorest state in the Union, West Virginia, Edwards, who is so against poverty, endorsed the person who lost that state by 41%. Then he said that part of his reason for endorsing Obama is Obama's "stand on poverty". What stand is that? The candidate who talks about the working poor is Hillary Clinton.

Number 6 in 24:

here's what I told you in 23,

"All of these positions that he's taken he did so that the power brokers who have allowed him to be presented on our tv as a prominent person would do so."

Combine that with the admonition from the christian bible that 'deception is a tool of the enemy'. and then you have your answer. Deception is widespread in the American mass media. Less so in your mass media, but don't worry it is coming to you too.

I may vote for Obama. I certainly won't vote for McCain or Clinton. Obama has differentiated himself slightly, in the last 2 months he started to say on his web site that he would withdraw the troops from Iraq within 16 months of taking office. So, he's differentiated himself. Prior to 2 months ago he said on his web site that he would reduce the number of troops in Iraq, but leave enough to attack other countries from the bases there. Now he says he'll leave enough troops to protect the embassy. He's a slippery politician, you can't really trust him. But he's differentiated himself from the others.

2 in 3 Americans want to bring all the troops home from Iraq quickly and forget the whole thing. But our elected leaders will not do this. Our mass media is lies controlled by 6 corporations. These corporations are with the mercantile clique that rules us. They make their decisions behind closed doors. Our politicians implement those decisions. Our elections are a circus.

If our politicians obstruct the implementation of decisions made by our rulers, then they will be portrayed as villains in our circus and the people will vote against them, that's how our democracy works.

My preference was Ron Paul. I may yet write his name in when November comes, but he stands no chance.

Bryan H. in 27:

http://www.ronpaul2008.com/

you can look at Paul's web site and read his 'Issues' in the issues tab. It speaks volumes about the American situation that you've taken an interest in the Republican candidates but don't know about Ron Paul. Because after all the televised debates from September of last year to December that Paul participated in against the other Republicans, they polled people who watched the debates and Paul was always the victor. That happened maybe 5-6 times, it happened on debates broadcast on CNN, Fox & MSNBC when Paul was speaking freely right with the other Republican candidates. In December of last year one poll had Paul at 15% among republicans and McCain at 17%. After December the tv news people started to focus in more detail on the candidates and it was at this time that Paul was always either excluded or insulted by the media people. They said he wasn't a real candidate, etc. Paul finished 2'nd in the Republican primaries in quite a few states. Paul defeated Guiliani in about 10 states. Guiliani only defeated Paul in 1 state. Guiliani dropped out early you'll remember. Paul won outright in Louisiana against all the other Republican candidates. But then the party leaders nullified the results and did it over under different rules, then Paul finished 2'nd.

Paul is the traditional Republican, I'd say his politics are similar to Calvin Coolidge who was president from 1925-1929. He had a great affinity to Ronald Reagan also. Paul's been a Republican congressman for 20 years. He'll be re-elected easily from his district in Texas this year. Paul has a reputation for voting 'no' on all spending bills. Thus the nick-name 'Dr. No'. He is a medical doctor who's delivered 4,000 babies. Paul would eliminate many federal agencies & programs including the Department of Education which micromanages public schools all over the nation.

Paul believes in the rule of law and would like for us to follow the constitution or else if not, then change the constitution rather than allow the constitution & rule of law to be disrespected. Paul would like to delete the Federal Reserve which is a money-creation system for the sake of private profit rather than for the public good. Paul would like to eliminate the IRS & the personal income tax. Paul would like to bring all of the troops home from all of the 70 or so countries that we currently have them. Paul would like to pursue trade policies that are in our national interest rather than in the interest of large corporations with global operations.

Paul would like for all of the money collected by the payroll tax to actually be used to fund the social security program as was originally intended rather than to divert the money collected for social security to some other purpose. Currently 40% of the money collected each week via the payroll tax is diverted from social security to fund the wars. Paul would like to make sure that all of the money paid by people into the social security fund be returned to them when they retire. He would also like to let young people option out of the social security program if they so desire.

People like Boy Wonder II (quite a homosexual sounding name) call Ron Paul a looney, a right wing nut etc, but they can't tell us why. They don't have any valid arguments.

Let's not forget that the Establishment and it's emasculated minions are terrified of Ron Paul and his supporters. Ron Paul is a true patriot and a natural leader.

thank-you 'Vote UKIP' for your comments on this thread. Your list of people killed when Clinton was president is accurate. I am familiar with many of the names and have read details of their stories. Those people really were murdered. and under Bush there have been more.

#1-Barbara- Ditto!!! We are not really the ones who pick our candidate. Hard to imagine that mccain; an old republican liberal, obama; a racist sheep in wolfs clothing, and hillary; a clinton running on her name- is the best we could come up with. The 2 parties are so out of touch. Hard to decide which is the lesser of the 3 evils.

If you have regrets after posting a comment just say so, don't make up wild claims. The name is identical.
