US PRESIDENT Barack Obama flew into Egypt today where he will deliver a high-profile speech aimed at building bridges with the Muslim world.
After spending the night in Saudi Arabia at King Abdullah's horse farm in the desert outside Riyadh, the president arrived in Cairo on the second leg of a four-day overseas trip.

Mr Obama is due to hold bilateral talks with President Hosni Mubarak
before making the address at Cairo University.

White House press secretary Robert Gibbs has said that the speech would serve as Mr Obama's "personal commitment to engagement" with the Muslim world, based on "mutual interest and mutual respect".

It is likely to address a number of topics of mutual concern including the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and stalled peace process.

The two-day tour of the Middle East is seen as a continuation of the president's efforts to "change the conversation" with the Islamic community, one aide to the administration has said.

Yesterday, Mr Obama spoke of his discussions with King Abdullah.

"I'm confident that working together, the United States and Saudi Arabia can make progress on a whole host of issues and mutual interest," the travelling US head of state said.

Explaining the reasoning for the stop-off in Riyadh, Mr Obama told reporters: "I thought it was very important to come to the place where Islam began and to seek His Majesty's counsel and to discuss with him many of the issues that we confront here in the Middle East."

After delivering his remarks at Cairo University, Mr Obama will tour the Pyramids and Sphinx before heading off to Germany for a two day European visit.

Arriving in Germany tomorrow, the president will visit Buchenwald, a Second World War concentration camp liberated by US troops in 1945.
The following day will see Mr Obama attend events to commemorate the D-Day landings in Normandy.

"Obama has the wit and the wisdom..."

wit...
"the keen perception and cleverly apt expression of those connections between ideas that awaken amusement and pleasure."

sorry, but it is increasingly obvious that BO lacks the gravitas associated with the job... (LOOK at the "teleprompter" observations)...

people reviled GWB because of his patterns of speach... because he didnt jump up and pull his hair out in an elementary classroom on 9/11... (nobody EVER says what a CEO SHOULD do under this circumstance)

but curiously you revel in BO as being a "wit"... but your BDS keeps you from according the same label to GWB...

Words are just words, - I think a lot of people are looking for something more from the president this time. Expectations are high... we're now entering his 'if only' phase of rhetorical diplomacy...

Fact is, Obama's Israel/Palestinian position, (and words) are exactly the same as the previous 9 presidents.
The only difference is Obama has an Arabic middle name to exploit.
If a name is enough, then that's great news and we all hope he can achieve something by using that to an advantage because every other approach to peace has failed.

In reference to Obama's wit and gravitas, I agree with Mike, I just haven't seen it manifest beyond 'just words'

http://www.gallup.com/poll/120728/Americans-Remain-Skeptical-Middle-East-Peace.aspx

A surprising new Poll came out today, which, although there are conversations in academia that would explain this Gallop data, it should be assumed that those opinions would not be evident in the typical poll. A gallup poll represents the average American, (not the Government or the president):

5 years ago, 58% favored a 2 state policy for Israel and the Palestsinians, but now only 51% favor it.

5 years ago, under Bush, 51% of the people believed the Arabs and Israel could live in peace. Today under our new president, its down to 32%

Americans have a 63% favorable image of Israel. and a 15% favorable of Palestinian Authority- with a whopping 73% unfavorable toward the PLA!!

I've been waiting for the answer to a simple question. In case you forgot the question Cutty, I'll repeat it for you.
You said to Stefan:
"I think we do. The sentiment is a good one. It troubles me that my children, and the children of others across the world, are growing up in a world of violence, hatred and greed. This is why I think it is time to wipe the slate clean and start to build a better world build on respect for and tolerance of others."

I asked, if that clean slate applies to the Palestinians too, . .. if they should be willing to start with a clean slate, respect, tolerate and hope for peace with Israel, if they can start a clean slate and raise their families to live without hate and violence...

Considering the poll, I guess most American don't think the Palestinians want a peaceful solution and are sincere in their words or actions, so they have a lot of PR work to do.
Actions speak louder than words.

Egypt is one of the nations mentioned as perhaps being a host nation for secret prisons funded by the US. I'm sure the following 'Torture Apologia Chart' will advance the cause of both Obama and Egypt who I would bet receives money from the US for torture.

"73% unfavorable toward the PLA!"
That just goes to show how ignorant Americans are right? The sooner more people stop buying American goods the better. Let's make sure their economy never rises again.
