SCOTTISH singer Paolo Nutini, whose debut album These Streets was a world-wide hit, will be the first musician to play both Edinburgh and Glasgow's Hogmanay celebrations, organisers said yesterday.
Paisley-born Nutini was the first act named yesterday for this year's extended Concert in the Gardens event in Edinburgh. He will launch the show in West Princes Street Gardens at 9pm before heading west to a concert in Glasgow city centre.

Councillor Steve Cardownie, Edinburgh's festival and events champion, said: "I'm delighted Scotland's premier New Year celebrations will be opened by a Scots artist. With Paolo on board, we are excited about what else the night will hold."

Other acts will be announced in November.

YET AGAIN we get our Festival 'CHAMPION': Councillor Cardownie, talking about 'Scotland's premier New Year attaction'!

THIRTEEN TIMES a year we, the ordinary citizens of Edinburgh have to endure, closed street (and NOT for the tram-works), diverted and over-crowded transport,
and at the 'Festive Time', stress, strain and over-time bills for the emergency services and council staff, late night noise and fireworks and, of course, thousands of noisy drunks, parading up and down the city centre streets!

The ONLY people who benefit from our annual 'Winter Festival' are the stall holders whoi all take the money and profits OUT of the city: who cause serious damage to Princes Street Gardens: the hotels, bars, restaurants and souvenir shops in the centre of the city.

Last year, from memory, the organisers ran up a LOSS - why are the rate-payers of the City being expected to fund this Cardownie praised 'tsunami' of celebration?

I note the 'admission' ticket prices have gone up this year - EXCELLENT lets see them price them sufficiently accurately so as to stop any requirement for a single penny from the rates: Let's see a special 'Winter Festival' levy from the shops, hotels, bars and restaurants in the centre of the city to pay for the entire event.

We are still in the first phase of the worst financial disaster in recent decades: thousands of Edinburgh citizens FEAR about their jobs and their financial futre...it would appear that our Council and 'Cultural Czar' are sitting in their palace on the High Streets while the starving peasants will have to charge up the Mound Steps to storm the Winter Palace (City Chambers) after the one o'clock gun has fired the starting shell!

Let's have Audit Scotland produce LAST years accounts (or let's see Councillor Cardownie PUBLISH them): Let's see details of all Councillor's claims and expenses for LAST year's fisaco published and let's see if Leader Jenny still feels she can justify the costs of the annual celebrati

Cardownie should be pursuing more
Edinburgh Live TV coverage. How many Edinburgh 'events' go unnoticed by Glasgow-based TV channels?

Here we go again - Ticket prices up amid a recession. Do the council really think that the majority of the folk on Princes St are actually contributing a lot to the economy? If so where does it all go and why do the council make a loss on the event? Before some clever individual advises on here it benefits us all - have a think before you reply with a convincing argument.

Come back Jimmies Shand and McGregor, Andy S and the White Heather Club. Why are we sinking so low these days?

Until I read your post, I didn't give two-hoots about the Hogmanay event - Been once before, it was OK.

However, after reading it, I am now fully convinced of the event's value & I'll be seriously thinking about wrapping-up warm, filling my flask with strong hot toddy & making as much noise as I possibly can when going through your area! :-P

Anyway, Paolo is a nice loon. Good luck to him. :-)
