THE head of one of Britain's most famous art galleries has warned that a deal to save two of Scotland's most valuable paintings has not been secured.
There has been much speculation in recent days that a deal, involving UK and Scottish Government funding, had been struck to buy the two Titian masterpieces.

Nicholas Penny, director of the National Gallery in London, said this was not the case though, and that any deal to buy the works from owner the Duke of Sutherland was still a long way off.

The Duke has offered the National Galleries of Scotland the opportunity to buy the painting – Diana and Actaeon – for £50m by the end of the year, securing the rest of the Bridgewater Collection in the city.

Mr Penny said: "We are talking about the greatest paintings in private ownership anywhere.

"I want them to stay in the UK and there has been absolutely no guarantees made about them."
