Published Date: 05 September 2008
THE French magazine Paris Match published pictures yesterday of Taleban fighters with "trophies" taken from French soldiers killed last month in Afghanistan.
The images, have set off a new round of pained debate about the French presence there.

Nicolas Sarkozy, the president, and his ministers have repeatedly said that since ten French soldiers were killed in an ambush on 18 August, France would not
falter in its determination to fight the "medieval" and "barbaric" Taleban.

But the pledges ring hollow in the ears of many French people who are suddenly being served blanket coverage of a faraway conflict involving about 2,600 French soldiers that had previously been confined to the inside pages of newspapers.

Paris Match rekindled emotions with its spread of photos of Taleban fighters displaying French army guns, uniforms, helmets, a walkie-talkie and a wristwatch they said were taken from dead soldiers during the 18 August ambush.

"It's a shock to see our children's killers parading their uniforms, their weapons," said Joel Lepahun, the father of one of the dead soldiers, on RTL radio.

Hervé Morin, the defence minister suggested that the magazine's reporters had done the Taleban a favour in the propaganda war.

"Should we be doing the Taleban's promotion for them?" he asked. "The Taleban are waging a war of communication."

Guess the French under Sarkozy will do what the French do best, SURRENDER. They will as usual allow others to bleed on their behalf.
It is amazing the number of morons who think that it will all stop if we pull out of Afghanistan. Ostriches with their heads firmly wedged in their fundamental orifices. They are like we were when we were kids. Hands over the eyes and saying "you can't see me, I am behind a tree". Grow up for goodness sake.

A senseless and offensive comment (as usual) from the troll in China....
As #2 Spectator says, China is nowhere to be seen when it comes to defending a population exposed to medieval, barbaric extremists (similar to the ones who kill off a few of your fellow citizens in your north-western provinces, no?).
Please keep your useless comments to yourself next time.

#3 ecossais at heart, france (with a small 'f')'senseless and offensive comment'You are entitled to your opinion, as am I.Troll? nope, you wish! Chinese citizen? wrong again. China looks after it's own citizens. The reason Xinjiang is quiet, is because they don't allow the likes of Abu Hamza to parade himself around at their expense, like the British do.If my comments offend you, tough.History shows my comments offensive though they may be, are true and correct.Perhaps you should volunteer for La Legion Etrange and give assistance to the french?
China is keeping it's own house in order.Perhaps Europe should ask how and why?I don't see anyone like Abu Hamza walking the streets here!Strange that.UK has lost the plot, as has the majority of Europe.Un-fettered immigration from the Nu-Labour lot has achieved what Hitler, the Kaiser and Napoleon couldn't.Emasculated the British people. A once proud and capable nation reduced to the planet's laughing stock. Make all the comments you wish to about me or China. In the end we know who will laugh last.

#2 Spectator, suggest you stick to spectating from a distance.Your comments as to d!ckhead! is neither original, nor does it upset me. I have been called far worse by better than you will ever be, and still prospered.Your knowledge of reality and China are sparse to say the least.Believe western propoganda you believed Teflon Tony for 12years, didn't do too well there either.

Macho posturing is not a way to run foreign policy in the 21st century. We shouldn't be going to war to 'kick some ass' and show how tough we are.
Apart from being extremely juvenile, it's also hypocritical; Why aren't we going to war against Zimbabwe? Why aren't we going to war over Tibet? If the 'hawks' who like to talk tough, surely they'd be better taking on a genuine tough opponent like China rather than a few disparate military groups in Afghanistan?

You have to make allowances for D'head as he comes from a skinhead background and macho posturing is all they know.

Heaven knows how he was allowed into China.

Pretty pathetic of the defence minister to say the magazine was wrong to print the pictures. it would seem the French, like the Americans in Vietnam, would rather the folks back home, had no idea about the realities of war.

There was a fascinating documentary on German tv last night about that very subject. it showed the American President claiming the war was over, to the cheers of a baying mob of US soldiers, about 2 weeks into the conflict.

It took the great Walter Kronkite, years later, to get through to the US public at large that not only were they not winning the war, but that they could not win
and must negociate a way out.

1000's of lives were lost or ruined by a pointless war ,
that ruined the American economy, moral and standing in the world. The similarities with todays US led conflicts were remarkable, and shows they have learned nothing about international relations.

The most depressing fact to emerge from the programme
was ref the US photographer who took the picture of the Vietnamese Police chief , shooting a civillian through the temple in the middle of the street. The picture won him multiple awards but he was saddened by it for the rest of his days ...and why ? because he was a "patriot" and felt it contributed to the peace movement without which,he was convinced, America could have won the war. A startling take on events clearly at
odds with reality on the ground.
After the war he even sought out the Police chief and apologised. The realities of war are horrific, but much better to reveal them than try to hide them
