SCUNTHORPE United have broken their transfer record to sign centre-back Rob Jones from Hibernian.
The 6ft 7in defender has penned a three-year deal after joining for an undisclosed fee, which was confirmed as a record amount.

Jones, 29, becomes manager Nigel Adkins' third addition of the summer and represents a major coup for the Iron.

"I wouldn't have moved to the club if I didn't think it could stay in the Championship," he told Scunthorpe's official website.

"It feels great to sign for Scunthorpe United. It's nice to be back in England and in an area which is familiar after my time at Grimsby.

"I wouldn't necessarily say where the club is was a factor behind the move, it's where the club is going.

"I came down on Wednesday and the move just felt right for me. The right noises came from the football club. I was interested in coming here and I've now cemented that."

Hibs chairman Rob Petrie praised the contribution of Jones, who was captain at Easter Road.

Petrie told his club's official website, www.hibs.co.uk: "Rob leaves with all our best wishes.

"Rob has led by example on and off the pitch. We could have asked for nothing more from him than the professionalism, commitment and leadership he demonstrated, particularly after the distractions in the transfer window last January.

"This is a move that Rob wants for family and footballing reasons and gives a return to the club at the right time.

"Rob will be remembered fondly as a cup winning captain, scoring with a towering header and lifting the CIS Cup in 2007.

"I would like to thank Rob for all that he has done for Hibernian Football Club and to extend the club's best wishes to him and his family and to wish him continuing success in his football career in the English Championship."

A shame to see him go but thats just part of football. Really hope that we can sign Barr, it would send a positive message to the fans but a new GK is still the priority.

We've got Hogg, Bamba, Murray and McCormack who can all come in for Jones but it would be great to see Barr and another keeper in.

Before all the Jambos start on here, think back a moment to the reasons why Kapridis left the club and see if you cant see some similarities to the Jones situation.

Very good though keep the chin up things could be worse your team could have just sold the player that stopped you being relegated last season, oops their he goes!!

So Rob Jones was worth 11 points to us last season on his own? And take away Aguairs goals and assists and I wonder how my points worse off Hearts would be?

5 I don't blame Jones for leaving as you say it's family and it's more important for a player to be settled. There wont be a decent replacement signed though and if you wont pay the wages for good freebies, what chance the tache splashing out a fee on a defender who is almost out of contract. It might well happen though as i imagine Petries door will be getting kicked down by an angry hobbo mob wanting some answers as to where all the transfer fees have gone for the last 5 years.

8 Aguiar will be replaced, at the end of the day he wanted more than the club felt he was worth and didn't subscribe to the new pay structure, cheerio and thanks for the memories. We have a manager who is more than capable of finding someone even better and we move on. Are you confident Hughes has the same ability to find another Jones, who lets face it wasn't very good really just his height gave him a massive advantage, and still cried like a wee baby at the physical side of the SPL. I would say yes if he had a board willing to give him a chance but that definately is not the case at fester road.

I must admitt im slightly sceptical about Barr coming, we have spent money (granted not huge amounts but some) on guys like Riordan, Jones, Nish and Bamba off the top of my head so dont see why Barr should be totally out of the question but cant say I'd put money on him being at ER come the start of the season.

You say Aguiar will be replaced but with who? I expect that your not gonna find a player will similar ability for the reduced wages available.

Also, I dont really think we need to necessarily replace Jones or Fletcher. Riordan, Benji, Nish and Byrne will do for me and we have Bamba, Hogg, Murray, Thicot and McCormack who can all come in for Jones who apparently you dont even rate anyway but also stopped us being relegated at the same time. Not sure how that quite works.

The most important areas for Hibs to improve on are midfield and goalkeeper. These are the priority areas and have been for years and Hughes has gone some of the way to addressing the midfield and will hopefully bring in a decent keeper. That plus another player or 2 and I expect an improvement on last season.

13

The Gorgie Boys Are In Town,

09/07/2009 13:22:29
12 I'm hoping he is already at Tynecastle, Laryea Kingston is every bit as good as Bruno but injuries and attitude have to improve, he is a quality player and if he can knuckle down we get a player and a fee for him in the future if he does well. Down to him though already Csaba is trying to get more from him by placing him in the shortlist to be the next Hearts captain. He knows how to get the best from his players as was shown last season and i'm looking forward to seeing his own assembled team on the park.

Disagree completely, we made the top 6 IN SPITE of our previous, incompetent manager, not because of the two players mentioned.

We had no midfield last year which cost us points game after game and only had a decent keepr for the final half of the season. We have players Ive mentioned already who can come in for Jones and Fletcher and 1 or 2 decent signings hopefully still to come and I would be very surprised if we didnt improve on our league position from last season.

I think you're in denial over Jones. Not one of the players you mention is remotely good enough to replace himnes. The idea that Hogg could be the man is laughable.

I thought Murray and Thicot played well together at the back end of the season

Unlucky Gers Fan, No 13:
"Losing Fletcher and Jones in the space of a few days is a real blow to Hibs. These two players were probably the only reason they made the top 6 last year"

It cannot be seen as a real blow, when both moves have been certain for so long. Maybe Gers Fans and the illiterate Hearts supporters will make out that its a fire sale, but any Hibs fans who know anything about what's going on would have been very surprised indeed if Jones or Fletcher were still here in August. Another year and Jones would have gone for nothing - this way Hibs get half a million. Another year of one-foot failing to live up to expectations and his value would have gone down!

glad to see him go, too many times out of position and ballwatching then a panic clearance- he contributed to last seasons hoofball. It will make Maka a better keeper too, if he is now allowed to boss the penalty area
good money what ever it was for a 29 year old with 1 year left on his contract
rather support a club that wont go bust- onwards with the new east stand

I would love to see us bring in Barr but I dont think that it will make or break our season whether he joins the club or not, again GK is the priority for us defensively IMO.

Jones is a good defender but Bamba and Murray are IMO as good or better and happy to have the other 3, including Hogg as cover. We seemed to do fine when Jones was absent in a couple of games towards the end of last season, most notably the 1-0 at Tynie where Murray and Thicot coped very well in a tough, high pressure game.

Also, if Jones was irreplaceable, I would have expected him to attract a higher calibre of club than Scunthorpe, Colchester etc if he was as quality a CB as you argue.

As for Hogg, your feelings are known but Im happy to have him as cover.

Just a wee correction - you were not castigated for suggesting that buying Barr would be a good bit of business, you were castigated for being a Jambo on the wind-up and didn't like that you'd been rumbled.

Oh, please indicate where any of my posts were "neddish", I think you'll find they weren't, but I spose this is just another of clever little tactics, right?

SU highest transfer fee was £425,000 so I suppose £500,000 for Jones seems about right. Not bad for a player who only had a year left and stated that he was keen to move back home.

However he will leave a gap that needs to be filled by a no nonsense defender. Hopefully this money will be released to JH and a quality replacement found. We'll just have to wait and see what we get.

You can't blame him. Anyone else who is anyone would do the same. Get 3k a week tops in edinburgh or probably 5k - 8k a week in the english championship. No brainer really

The only laughing stock is at the PBS, the Circus of fools with painted faces, big shoes and cars that have doors that fall off.

Hibs will always be ambitious, within a well doctrinated environment.

Hearts have tried to buy their way to the top and in doing so got a rather large bill at the end of it.

And now, they scrape the bucket of bargains, with unknowns with unpronouncable names who are pseudo signings and journeymen.

Hertz, will be the cannon fodder of the SPL this season.

Ive read a few of the comments about Bruno Aquiar. Lets not pretend here,Aguiar was a classy player well above most of his teamates and Hearts WILL miss him and it will show in points unless Csaba can find a replacement Yes Im sure he could in theory.

Will he be allowed to? Thats another matter altogether. Quality costs money for a start. Vlad wouldn't know a football player from a Lithunanian highland dancer.

I noticed that another two Lithuanian two left feet have arived to try their luck.I wonder whose idea that was?
Certainly not Csaba Lazlo's Ill bet!
Hearts have a competent manager but when money is tight theres a limit to how far you can progress, and I think its a question of time before some English club invites him south.I hope not, but...............Ill be very surprised if he stays with Mad Vlad around ,the first decent offer and I would run for it.
I like Lazlo, but he cannot work miracles and Hearts need quality as in half a dozen players if they want to play against their opposite numbers in Europe.

Players arrive and depart as they do at any club close season of course, but most are an unknown quantity to the fans.I just hope Csaba has taken them because he has faith in them, not because they were all that Hearts could afford.

We shall find out. Before I am accused of being negative, can I suggest you look up the meaning of realism. Thats what I am !
Nobody wants to see a winning team more than I do.
