An all-English football team could represent Britain at the London 2012 Olympics after the Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish football associations agreed not to block the idea.
Rob Shorthouse, the Scottish Football Association's head of communications, said: "The four home associations have met. The proposal to let England go it alone has now been put forward to Fifa for their consideration and that will be discussed at the Fifa Congress next week."

The long-running wrangles over fielding a British squad for the London Olympics has been a hot political issue as the Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish football associations fear it could threaten their independence.

A joint letter from the four associations was sent to Fifa this morning saying Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland would have no involvement in the Olympic tournament but would not prevent an England team from doing so.

The deal will have to be ratified by Fifa before it is officially confirmed.

Mr Shorthouse said: "The fundamental point to make is the Scottish FA will not be changing its stance on Team GB.

"We're absolutely against the four nations playing in a unified team, so Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland's stance hasn't changed."

The SFA were furious last week with FA chairman Lord Triesman, accusing him of breaking an agreement for the issue to remain confidential until a deal was signed.

The SFA feels there has been a need to change their stance to help sort out the issue of a British football team for 2012 once and for all.
It is understood that just saying 'no' all the time could do more harm than good to the individual football associations.

Mr Shorthouse said: "We're acknowledging there's very little we can do to stop them going forward.

"We're acknowledging the fact that England are of a mind to put a team forward for the London 2012 Olympics.

"Our view and the view we will be expressing to the football family around the world is that it's Team GB only in name because Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland will not be involved."

The Fifa executive committee will meet on Monday.

Mr Shorthouse said: "A letter has gone to them saying the English would like to take part.

"Regardless of that, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland would not be a part of Team GB."

On the likelihood of Fifa rejecting this proposal, Mr Shorthouse said: "They want it sorted every bit as much as we do. As far as they're concerned, it's an ideal situation.

"There'll be a team, and the row goes away."

Good, now that's sorted.
Next stop, full and equal Olympic membership for the sovereign nation of Scotland.
It seems like a natural progression.
Considering some of the dodgy countries that show up for the opening ceremonies every four years.

So the GFA have once again bottled it- or have they taken the 13 peices of silver being offered by the BOA?

Firstly going from a policy of refusing to consider the concept to sending a letter to FIFA advising they have no objection to team GB is quite a turn around- or a humillating climb down.

Secondly an olympic team GB has nothing to do with FIFA, is an under 23 tournament which has little to no coverage in the media. The GFA are only interested in self preservation (not scottish football preservation) and lining their own pockets.

If FIFA mandated that all national associations should be run from the countries capital the howels of abuse that would come from hampden and their loyal redtops would be deafening!

No wonder the rest of the world thinks that England and Britain are interchangeable.

Clearly, this team should be competing as "England", not as "GB". The SFA should have stood their ground and blocked the whole concept. This decision could still cause problems for the future of a Scottish team as there will be a precedent of GB and England being seen as the same thing in a football sense.

I bet they don't dare try to arrange a fixture for them at Hampden. Can you imagine the non-stop booing?

A disgraceful decision - and do you really think that it's only an "under 23 tournament which has little to no coverage in the media". That was then.

Will the unionist government of the day let this one go by without pulling out all the stops on publicity? I don't think so. Let's hope Scotland is independent by then anyway.

Scotland is not British.

England and Britain are the same thing therefore they can call themselves whatever they like.

Sounds like a storm in a teacup. A non-problem which will cease to exist after Scotland's return to full sovereignty, when the confusion over the terms Britain and England will no longer concern us.

Meanwhile, there's nothing in the Olympics for me; neither my sport (rugby), nor my country (Scotland) will be present.

Makes no difference. No Scot, Welshman or Irishman would get in the team on merit anyway.

I think we'd be as well with Team GB and an integrated British league.

Scottish football is a bit of a joke at all levels.

Well England got the deal they wanted in the first place! To play an England team under the GB banner without the inconvenience of picking any second rate Scots, Welsh or Nr Irish players who in their opinion would have only devalued an otherwise excellent team.!

If we did have a GBFA it would be so much better - also it would mean an end to the likes of Gordon Smith getting unmerited jobs.

A GBFA is the way forward. Scotland is too parochial.

Too many bitter old jocks on here ,you didn't want to part of Team G.B. and now you're not, so be satisfied and let people who enjoy their sport get on and participate.

#8 you are saying there are no good Scottish players in either Scotland or in the Premiership. What about all the Scottish managers also.

Although it seems in England they do not have many good players either kudging by the foreign players.
