BRITISH and Irish Lions boss Ian McGeechan has made wholesale changes for Saturday's final Test against world champions South Africa, with one Scot, Ross Ford, sitting on the bench.
A wrist injury has sidelined Wales star Jamie Roberts, so England's Riki Flutey forges a new midfield combination with Tommy Bowe, who switches from the wing.

Ugo Monye, dropped after the first Test defeat, returns in the number 14 shirt, with world player of the year Shane Williams starting instead of Luke Fitzgerald on the other wing.

England props Andrew Sheridan and Phil Vickery take over from injured pair Gethin Jenkins and Adam Jones, while back-row changes see starts for Wasps flanker Joe Worsley and Wales openside Martyn Williams.

The seven changes and one positional alteration mean just four players will have started all three Tests – fly-half Stephen Jones, scrum-half Mike Phillips, skipper Paul O'Connell and number eight Jamie Heaslip.

The Lions must win at Ellis Park to avoid suffering a Test series whitewash for the first time in 118 years of fixtures between the sides.

And no-one will be more fired up than Vickery, who returns for another confrontation with Springboks loosehead Tendai "The Beast" Mtawarira.

Vickery was scrummaged into oblivion by Mtawarira in Durban almost a fortnight ago.

"It is fair to say injuries have had an impact on the tour, as you would expect," said McGeechan.

"We were unfortunate to lose Brian O'Driscoll, Jamie Roberts, Gethin Jenkins and Adam Jones through injury last Saturday.

"However, the players coming into the starting XV are all talented international players and are as keen as ever to turn the tables on the Springboks.

"Last Saturday, we were minutes away from winning, and that is a huge positive to take into the third Test."

McGeehan has opted for five forwards on the bench – hooker Ross Ford, prop John Hayes, lock Alun-Wyn Jones, plus flankers Tom Croft and David Wallace, who drop out of the starting XV.

Scrum-half Harry Ellis and fly-half James Hook will provide back division cover.

McGeechan added: "The 2009 Lions have thrown themselves into the spirit of the tour, interacted with the people of South Africa and shown themselves to be great ambassadors for northern hemisphere rugby.

"As a squad, they have met many challenges on the tour, including playing two matches per week, the inevitable injuries and two narrow Test losses.

"Despite this, they have remained a tight, focused squad."

Three players – Sheridan, Worsley and Martyn Williams – all make their full Lions Test debuts.

Fitzgerald dropped for Williams and Monye, Why????
Bowe should be on the wing and Darcy or Hook at centre with Earls on the bench to cover the back 3, AWJ ahead of Hines may have been close. Worsley or Croft ahead of Wallace must also have been close! Mears and may have been close too!

What the hell is geach thinking about. Vickery got completely outclassed in the first test so you bring him back. AWJ added zero so you leave out Hines. Paul O C should have been on the bench. One again I will be supporting the Boks agains the Welsh, English and Irish Lions.

I'm disappointed. It seems that McGeechan, no doubt pressed by Rowntree, and with an eye on the future at Wasps has chosen Vickery in the hope he can redeem himself. If he does good on him. If not.....
The rest of the changes are as expected. Hines should have been on the bench except in what is likely to be round 2 of a punch up how long would he last? Monye will be at least as effective as Fitzgerald in a defensive physical match. The Lions won't be scoring many tries.
I see there's only one prop on the bench. I suppose we can look forward to uncontested scrums again.

#2 - stupid comment.

However cannot believe that Hines is not in the squad, as in my (admittedly biased) opinion he has been excellent on this tour. S Williams has had chance and chance and chance again and done absolutely nothing. he does not deserve to be there. (Having said that he will now score a hat trick on Saturday).

Really thought Earls was close given some of the tries he has scored. Flutey was a cert but putting Bowe at13 is not brilliant even though he plays there regularly. Hines fluffed it by getting ban.

Well done Ross Ford... must have sneaked in under the radar, or maybe Geech has forgotten he's Scottish?? ;-)

Selfishly glad Hines isn't in the team as means he won't get injured or pick up a ban in a nothing game. He deserves a test cap however as is a great lock.

Another joke team. Earls, Fitzgerald and Hook must be checking to see if they have any Scottish ancestry, given the selection of Bowe (in the centre) and Moyne.

And I'll say it again: exactly why is Blair wasting his time in SA? He was clearly never considered a viable contender for a test spot, so one has to conclude he was only there for political reasons ie keep the jocks happy.

I bet Ford gets 5 minutes at the end, just to avoid the Lions going through a whole series without a single Scotman on the pitch, so that the fallacy of a British & Irish Lions can be continued (again) for another 4 years.

Well. I suppose injuries come into it but some of the selections look strange - but good luck to Ford, he has hung in there well. My main hope is that with all the whining and girning over Burger, albeit appearing to be justified, the Springboks have not been put into a mood which will see them really go for the Lions in the last test. The British press have given them next to no credit for winning what was a very hard and entertaining game and that may rankle a bit.

Got all the signs of a 'thanks for the effort boys' for the Wasps contingent. Out of the 22, England have the biggest representation of 8, next it's the Welsh with 7, then the GS champs with 6. This is the same England contingent that got royally butt-f****d twice by the Boks in Autumn.
I'm sure Blair gained a lot from the tour - namely how heavy the other players bags are when he was charged with carrying them.
Another gritty defeat beckons I fear.

A clear clear bias towards the wasps old boys; the beast must be licking his lips at the thought off polishing of his downed pray that is the elderly and over rated vickery.

What a joke,

I thought our game suffered from politics but yours takes the cake. Paranoia about Scottish players being picked for political reasons and so on, I have never heard anything like it outside of SA.
We have made 10 changes to the team that won the series. But we should still have enough to win it 3-0. The Lions have been superb opponents and thank you to them and their fans for making it such a memorable tour.

The whole coaching staff have to have a word with themselves. Or a bit of an explanation to hoi polloi like me. How can there possibly be 8 english in this lions team and 1 scotsman. As far as I'm concerned the Lions as a concept is gone, dead, kaput. It may well be deemed sour grapes but you're not telling me that there are no other scots boys good enough to play in a lions test team (that looks like its going to be whitewashed). I just hope to god that robinson uses this as fuel for next 6 nations. Totally disgraceful.

#13 Paranoia? Do me a favour!

World player of the year = bag carrier

Leicester 2nd XV scrum half = Lions reserve for 3 tests

Yet to hear a reasonable explanation for this, especially as every Tom, Dick and Harry is getting a game in the last test, and Vickery is back in the team!
16

Joburg Pete,

02/07/2009 17:45:38
Hamish, I would imagine the real reason is that the coaching staff who work with the player every day felt he wasnt good enough to make the first 15.
That is how it works, when you're a coach you pick the team you feel will win you the game.

Monstro,

#16 These will be the coaches that picked the first team, which everyone on these forums derided for the front row, back row choice and no steel in the team and lo' it came to pass! Things were put right for the 2nd test but the Boks had the luck and that was the series gone. Now we have a "hats off to the Wasps old boys" team! Unbelievable bias and blinkered selections. I don't believe that training sessions run by the same guys will be any different, with the glory boys given every chance to shine together?

Quite agree, isn't it wonderful to watch those South Africans, so proud of their country, for all its woes.
As a Scotland fan what is there for me in watching 15 men in red get stuffed by those Boks. Each would die for that green jersey.

have said it before you do not win lions matches unless
you have scottish players on the field.
mike blair was actually eaten by a lion thats why he has never been picked.
croft on the bench, vickery worth watching for the humour value. shaw and hinds with croft would have been a great combo.
the boks have been a class act. we would needed to have been at our very best to beat them , this was not a great lions team hence it will be 3-0.
since we have been well beaten with our first choice teams perhaps we should have put the forgotten men on the field and tried hook and blair.
