GENERAL Sir Mike Jackson claims that "it was more cost-effective to defend the British Isles" than if it was "broken up" (your report, 30 June).
It may come as a surprise to him that the British Isles was "broken up" decades ago, when the Republic of Ireland was formed. If he truly believes that a common defence of the British Isles is more cost-effective and increases security, then, instead of preaching to the people of Scotland, he should take his message to the taoiseach of Ireland.

It's a farce anyway, as more Republic of Ireland citizens join the British armed forces than will join their own token defence force (the IDF - whose budget was smaller then even that of the Provisional IRA at their height), since it's not exactly a secret that in the unlikely event of Ireland ever being threatened by a foreign power, the British Armed Forces would instantly step in.

For better or worse, the British Armed Forces have remained a British Isles armed forces in practice, as well of course with invaluable help from the Nepalese!
