HARRY ALLEN – JOE COHN QUARTET
…Plays Music From South Pacific

****

Arbors Records ARCD 19380, £13.70
Singers Rebecca Kilgore and Eddie Erickson should really get the star billing since they're so heavily featured on this lovely and unusual album, which translates virtually the entire Rodgers and Hammerstein musical into jazz. The result is a swinging, laid-back affair which should appeal to mainstream jazz fans (who like their songs sung straight) and aficionados of musical theatre. Harry Allen's romantic sax and the gentle guitar of Joe Cohn are also highlights.
