Burley heaps praise on 'limited' Broadfoot

Published Date: 04 September 2008
SCOTLAND manager George Burley, normally one of the most diplomatic speakers in football, yesterday praised Kirk Broadfoot as a player of "limited ability" who had managed to force his way into the national squad. The blunt assessment of the Rangers defender might be regarded in many quarters as uncontentious, but it runs contrary to Burley's usual practice of talking up his squad.
It would not be regarded as a textbook way of building up a player's confidence, and could incur the wrath of some Rangers supporters. Nonetheless, Broadfoot himself lent some credence to Burley's words by admitting that he had been surprised by the call-up, and that, at first, he had thought it was only a wind-up.

Broadfoot has been called into the party for the World Cup qualifiers against Macedonia and Iceland after a number of withdrawals – and the loss of three more players because of injury yesterday made Burley decide to bring in Michael Stewart, the Hearts midfielder.

Callum Davidson, Kevin McNaughton and Kevin Thomson were the three players to call off yesterday, while earlier in the week Garry O'Connor, David Weir and David Marshall all withdrew. Barry Ferguson and Allan Hutton were already unavailable because of injury.

Jamie Langfield is in as goalkeeping cover and Stewart will be midfield back-up, but it was Broadfoot who appeared to inspire most enthusiasm in Burley when the manager addressed the media yesterday.

"It's great to see somebody, you've got to say maybe with limited ability, who has really worked hard at his game and progressed and held his own in Europe," Burley said.

"Kirk is a player who has progressed. Going from St Mirren to Rangers has been a big test for him. But he commanded a regular place in the Rangers team all last season and played in their European games, and you saw on Sunday how much he has improved as a full-back.

"I was at the (Celtic vs Rangers] game and I thought he was outstanding against Aiden McGeady, who is one of the best wide players in Britain. He is a determined character and we need those type of people away from home, especially in World Cup qualifying games, so I had no hesitation in bringing him to the squad."

Broadfoot admitted he thought he was having his leg pulled when he was told of the call-up – unsurprisingly so, given the call came from the Rangers assistant manager Ally McCoist.

"This is not something I expected," the 24-year-old said. "I got a phone call from Coisty and I thought to myself: 'He's winding me up.' It's the type of thing Coisty or Kris Boyd would do. But the more he talked the more I realised he was serious. I couldn't believe it. He was over the moon as much as I was, to be honest. When it did sink in, I was thrilled about it.

"I'd been planning a few days away with my missus and was in the process of booking a trip to Marbella when the call came. But this is a great bonus for me."

The scheduling of an Old Firm match the week before the World Cup campaign gets under way has been criticised in some quarters, but Broadfoot saw it as ideal. "An Old Firm game is probably the perfect preparation for players to go and play for Scotland," he said. "You've come out of probably the hardest game in the league – no disrespect to the other teams."

Burley might not regard the scheduling in quite the same light, but he did point out that Thomson was the only direct loss because of the match between the Glasgow clubs.

"Barry Ferguson and David Weir were not involved in the Old Firm game. Old Firm games are competitive, and it happens. There have not been any arranged for after international games. You're talking about one player with an Achilles injury, and that could maybe happen any time.

"Some key players were out before we started – Barry Ferguson, Alan Hutton – but the actual shape of the team hasn't changed. The personnel may be slightly different, but I haven't changed my mind on the shape. We worked at it yesterday, we're going to do a little bit more at Hampden today, so that's set in place.

"We've been unlucky with injuries, which you get, so that's why I named 25. We've got 22 to go to Macedonia and I'm comfortable with the size."

He is also comfortable with the personnel. The loss of Thomson in addition to Ferguson may leave Scotland short of midfield playmakers, but the manager is convinced that is the area of the team in which he can most afford such withdrawals.

"Midfield, and our two goalies who I think are top-class internationals, are the strongest element of our team as far as the competition is concerned. So we've got other players who can take their place.

"Kevin has had a terrific season – he has settled down at Rangers now and has big potential. He'll get his day, but it's an area where we have got other players to come in."

There could still be further call-offs before the squad fly out to Skopje tomorrow for Scotland's opening Group 9 match against Macedonia. James Morrison, for instance, believes himself to be fit, but his club manager, Tony Mowbray, is not so certain.

"I picked up a little knock on Saturday, but I just rested it for a few days and I'm sure I'll be fine," the West Brom player said. "I missed a few call-ups in the past and I'm desperate to be involved."

Mowbray, however, suggested that eagerness to play might be affecting Morrison's judgment. "James suffered an injury and is a doubt for Scotland as well," the former Hibs boss said yesterday. "My initial fear was that he'd suffered damage to his medial ligament in a block challenge during the game against Bolton.

"He was adamant that he wanted to play and he did, even though he had a slight knock. They have assessed his injury and it's not quite so bad as first thought. I'm sure James will tell George Burley that he wants to play, but he may not be fit for it."

A little too much is being made of the "limited ability" comment. Burley emphasises that Broadfoot has "progressed" - and remember that the player appeared for the Scotland under-21 and B teams while at St Mirren.

Wow. George Burley, Master of Motivation, strikes again. I can see our lads going out there feeling they're invincible, what with the heat and their limited ability, like...

A player who has worked hard to improve his game.

A Scottish international quality player, a debatable point, with the injuries and call offs at least he answered the call.

Best of luck.

There's nothing worse than that limited ability of his charging down the wing and sending in a lovely cross....GOAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Burley is the one with limited ability otherwise he wouldn't be Scotland manager.
Unlike Wattie and Big Eck, he won't be moving on to bigger and better things.
Well done big Kirkie, at least you won't let Scotland down.
And you've got nothing to prove.
Not when you're playing for the most successful football club in the world.....ever.

WHOA!! there boys, don't get your knickers in a twist because wee Geordie says big Kirkie has "limited ability".

Wee Geordie is from Cumnock, big Kirkie is from nearby Drongan. Everyone in football from Cumnock thinks he's better than everyone else in Ayrshire, it's nonsense but they ingest this belief with mother's milk.

Wee Geordie went to Cumnock Academy, big Kirkie went to Auchinleck Academy. This adds some frisson to the beliefs, CA is always superior to AA is the belief.

Therefore, this whole thing is simply Ayrshire local politics at play and shouldn't be taken too seriously.

BTW, as (like Burley) a Cumnock Academical, but unlike him, not from Cumnock itself, can I say, Broadfoot is no Eric Caldow or Sammy Cox (two previous Ayrshiremen to have played full back for Rangers and Scotland), but, he has worked hard at his game, has done a lot better than some of his allegedly more-gifted contemporaries at Hibs and St Mirren and deserves his chance; having come up via the SFL, SPL and the national Under-21 and B teams. I'd rather see my Scotland squad players promoted this way than being plucked out of mid-air because of a Scottish grannie and some consistent if undistinguished displays in the English Championship or Premiership.

#21- glasgow is disgusting, the people on a whole (there are few exceptions) are disgusting.

As for broadfoot- could he be the worst player since berti vogts time to play for scotland?

Also how many times during a game does he have to do that purile dive- He skips past a player then jumps to the ground. He has done it at least once in each game this season yet has never been castigated in the media nor has he ever been booked.

Broadfoot is a guy who is as intellegent as he is good looking.

If he'd said Broadfoot was a wonderful talented player he'd be getting slaughtered for it. Broadfoot does have limited ability, it's hardly a revelation. Burley also said he had improved tremendously and was outstanding against McGeady.

The Scotsman seem to have an agenda with Burley although I have no idea why. I have every confidence in the man, who is certainly a better manager than McLeish.

I agree we are definitely not a backwater my esteemed methadone addicted colleague asScotland is the only country in the world to boast two UNESCO world cities amongst many other feathers in our cap.

To compare the city of culture accolade with being a milk monitor smells of sour milk on your part as I seem to remember Auld Reekie suffered a bloody nose in their attempts to win this prestegious award, a bit like when the bird you fancy knocks you back for your pal and you say "ah didnae fancy her anyhow, she's a dog"

With regards to calling Scotland a backwater, what do you expect from that lot?

Regardless of how good/bad Kirk Broadfoot is, the game on Sunday did not show that he had McGeady "in his pocket"more that the tactics employed by Rangers nullified McGeady's threat. Most commentators in fact seem to be giving a lot of the credit to Steve Davis or a combination of both players. There is no question that he is at present of limited ability, but if we need him for Scotland then we need him for Scotland. He done well enough against some good players during Rangers european run

I expect Burley to be one of our worst managers ever and the Press are building him up as they did before with McLeod,Berti etc. He already reckons we will get 17 points and qualify. He hasn't got a clue. Remember this time and date.

I thought the manager was meant to motivate his players but this time Burley has done the opposite. As for the flower of scotland anthem that is one of the worst song on record. Its words take scotland back to the dark ages and the Harry Lauder rubbish. They really need to move on in Scotland.

I appreciate what you're saying, but I would imagine Kirk having limited ability is of no surprise to himself. What Burley has done is point out that with hard work and diligence it is possible for players to transcend their lack of skill and make a decent career for themselves. I actually think Burley telling him face to face would be worse.

I think maybe Burley said it because he has taken so much stick for calling him up in the first place and was explaing the reasons.

Broadfoot will get over it. It'll be like water off a Camel's hmp
29

Alan B,

How many of the players in the scottish team are not off limited ability?

It is all relative. With Broadfoot it is about adjusting to playing right back when he had previously been a central defender.

Ok so you do not personally like it. However lets face it, it because the national anthem song, because most scots fans felt insulted by GSTQ, with the result scotland were about the only country booing their own anthem. While an overwhelming number of people want it to be replaced by flower of scotland, for political reasons it was replaced by scotland the brave. And that never caught on. Rugby then took the decision to jump to the song most wanted at the time and football followed suit.

Also most other national anthems are poor with afew exceptions. And who that actually goes to scotland games want it changed.

I think you find the reporter is just playing up a passing phrase made by the manager, trying to justify Broadfoots inclusion. Particularly as it was abit out the blue and Broadfoot many rangers supporters did not see him as a top plaer. By choosing Whittaker for the NI squad Burley had shown intent that he though Whittaker was going to be Rangers right back this yr and would Burleys other choice for that position.

It is also a remark that says to the many young scottish footballers who think they are good, that hard work pays dividents. Lets face it was have many who p*** their careers away.

Burley did well with Ipswich. Won the cup winners cup. From memory they only just got pipped for the league by Villa who then lifted the European cup the next yr. English league was at it peak back then.

Burley did get a limited amount of caps due to people like McGrain. Scotland had good full backs then aswell as Jardine there was Kennedy of Aberdeen.

I'll judge the sense of George's comment by the result on Saturday. Management is all about knowing how to treat individual players, and if Broadfoot responds well - which I hope, and am sure, he will - then George has got it right. There are plenty of players who've reached very high peaks by being technically limited (which I presume George meant) but applying themselves. That wee, permed English lad who's currently locked in a cupboard in St James' Park having the soles of his feet beaten springs to mind.

Jamboy, away and learn your history. This country ( YOUR country) is called the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Check out your passport. Thus, when Gers fans wave Union flags ( think about the meaning of THAT word) they are not the flags of a foreign country. The "rebellious Scots" referred to in the National Anthem ( from a verse abandonned a long time ago)meant ONLY the Scots rebels lead by the Pretender "Prince" Charles as his army invaded England. The vast majority of Scots ( and obviously the English)detested Ugly Prince Charlie and his Jacobites and fought against him. He was thrown out of most Scots towns in his journey to, and espoecially from, England. The vast majority of the Scottish population supported the Union and have done for the past 300 years - otherwise the SNP would have been elected to power at some point in the past few decades.

Grow up and be proud of your country Scotland, within the union of Great Britain.
