LAURA Gordon, chief executive of the Glasgow-Edinburgh Collaboration Initiative, is to host a two-day event in Brussels tomorrow aimed at raising the profile of the ground-breaking Scottish economic development partnership.
Organised in partnership with Scotland Europa, the economic and political contact point in Brussels, the "Collaborate to Compete" event will feature presentations from other European collaborating cities, including Copenhagen-Malmo, known as Oresund,
and the four Dutch cities (The Hague, Rotterdam, Amsterdam and Utrecht) known as Deltametropolis. Also attending will be the enterprise minister, Jim Mather, and Ian Merchant chief executive of Scottish & Southern Energy.

Gordon, left, said: "We think it's important to raise the profile of Glasgow-Edinburgh as high-performing European cities which, through working together, can become more competitive and successful. Examining other city collaborations, and learning from successful ones such as Oresund and Deltametropolis, will enable us to extrapolate the successes applicable at home.

"This will reap benefits for short, medium, and long-term planning for the Glasgow Edinburgh collaboration."

Gordon said that the city collaboration project seeks to maximise Glasgow and Edinburgh's combined assets to "create the best prospects for attracting and retaining investment and people", and she cited remarks on Friday by the Scottish Secretary, Des Browne, who said at a conference in Glasgow that collaboration between the two cities was "not an option but an economic imperative".

Except that's it has the biggest population, the biggest economy, the biggest HE sector, the best shopping retail and leisure, etc. in Scotland, #2. Sure there are problems - just like in most comparable UK cities - but there's plenty good and getting better.

Surely there's plenty public spending in Edinburgh that's tagged as 'national' - all the national Government, national galleries - they're for all Scotland but just happen to be in Edinburgh... but that's fine, I'm not complaining, it's the capital.

#3 poor economy of giro and incapacity dependance more like, and glasgow population is dwindling whilst the capital's is increasing, the capital is the 5th biggest finance centre in europe so lets not have an argument about economies, edinburgh's thriving business communuity are sick of having to subsidise the rest of scotland, including glasgow !

#1 - How does GARL help anyone who can't get to Glasgow Central easily (i.e. anyone north of the Clyde, or east of South Lanarkshire)?

Getting the train into Queen Street, then lugging 25 kgs of bags across to Central will be a complete pain (especially of your travel time happens to coincide with rush hour).

Edinburgh Airport will still be far easier for most of Scotland's population to reach, even if it does mean changing onto a tram at Gogar or Edinburgh Park stations.

#4, so how many jobs in Glasgow and how many in Edinburgh then? The respective GDPs? And Glasgow's population is increasing, has been for several years. And then you can add in Glasgow's wealthy suburbs, which - unlike Edinburgh's - aren't included inside the municipal boundary.

And I'm not having a go at Edinburgh. It's a fine city.

If the Glasgow boundary was extended to encompass the surrounding areas, including East Ren where i live, it would boost the city no end. Reading the comments on here, the Glasgow Edinburgh collabration seems to be a complete waste of time, better both Glasgow and Edinburgh keep their own business rates and then reinvest it back into the their respective areas. At least then we wont have the usual whininging from Edinburgh residents and the man from Livingston...
