Scots owe £1bn in unpaid council tax

LOCAL authorities in Scotland are due nearly £1 billion in unpaid council tax.
Some of the debt dates back as far as 1993 but £109 million relates just to the last financial year.

The average collection rate across Scotland last year was 94.4 per cent, 0.2 percentage points up on the previous year.

I think some problems as far as Glasgow is concerned, occured when the Council found a new piece of jargon 'the one-stop-shop'; remember? They seemed to apply it to housing benefit and council tax, but in typical glasgow city council fashion, never actually did it.

Result? quite a number of people, probably in all honesty, got the impression that if they had applied for one benefit, they had applied for the other. Some seem not to have been informed of the actual state of affairs until they were in serious arrears.

Council tax also kicks in at quite a high rate at a surprisingly low income band. Again, the council's reaction seems to be more leaflets and buzz words.

There may indeed be some people who are at it - but many are decent people in genuine hardship, who have not been helped by an organisation with more than its fair share of baffoons.

Could it be that some misguided souls actually believe Council Tax to be excessive?

there are some who cant pay,and loads of those who can pay ,but dont
go after those with the means to pay,dont hit the poor as is always the case,sending in vultures who price a plasma tv @£5 in their sale of goods,dont know why some labour councilors moan about non payment,wasnt there a case where a labourite defrauded his local housing,with benefit claims to which he was not entitled?,im sure those who live within his catchment area will let me know
but if it was a single parent,their butt would be in front of a nd a heavy fine imposed
yet MPs raked in fortunes,and were declared very naughty boys indeed

Hardly surprising the tax was incredibly difficult to calculate and to keep track off. The whole concept was shambolic and should never have been introduced in the first place. LIT was ever the better alternative and still is with this new proposal now being put forward.
