CHINA is not the only country to fake a musical performance during an Olympic opening ceremony. It turns out that Australia also knows a thing or two about miming music.

Eight years after Sydney hosted what was dubbed "the best Olympic Games ever", officials with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra acknowledged that their stirring performance at the 2000 opening ceremony was entirely pre-recorded.

And perhaps even
more cringe-inducing for Sydneysiders: some of the music was recorded by the orchestra of Sydney's rival, Melbourne.

The disclosure of the mimed performance – which both orchestras have defended as a necessary pre-caution against embarrassing mistakes – followed an international uproar over China's decision to pass off the voice of a seven-year-old singer as that of another girl at this year's Olympic opening ceremony. The Beijing ceremony's chief music director said the real singer, Yang Peiyi, with her chubby face and crooked baby teeth, was not good-looking enough.

So the pigtailed and perky Lin Miaoke mouthed the words to Ode to the Motherland instead, in front of the 91,000 spectators at the National Stadium and television audiences globally.

Melbourne Symphony Orchestra managing director Trevor Green confirmed today that the 2000 opening ceremony performance had been pre-recorded by both the Sydney and Melbourne orchestras, saying that such steps had to be taken to ensure mistakes were not made live during such high-profile events.

"If you've got an event the size of the Olympics, and you've got billions and billions of people watching it, you definitely have to have a backing track and mime to it, because anything could go wrong," Mr Green said.

"It is just a 'safety first' thing. You simply cannot take the risk."

The Sydney orchestra's decision to call on Melbourne for help was not surprising, given the workload, Mr Green added.

"It was just too much for one orchestra," he said. "We share artists all the time and conductors all the time."

....and you can bet your boots that there will be a degree of "Miming" at the London olympics too.

#1.

If the New Labour Sleaze and Corruption Party are still around, you can bet that a lot of it will be fake.

Boycott the English Olympics.

Bwaaah ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. I wondered how long it would take for this story to come out. Oh come on , where's the disgugst! Where's the outrage! a little indignation PLEASE.

#4 Mibbee because havin orchestras pre-record isnae the same as not letting a wee girl appear cos she didnae look cute enough.
I thought she was cute. Maybe they should let this subject drop until they get how mean it was.

#4 When (or better, if) China ever attains the high international standard of a civilized nation, as Australia has in spades, it will be viewed in a completely different light and be cut some slack in its peccadilloes. So far, it merits no such consideration.

The whole movie industry is based on pulling the wool over our eyes, and nobody bitches about that, and we shell out billions annually to have the wool pulled over our eyes.
Let's see,
special effects,
pre-recorded soundtracks,
lip-syncing in the musicals,
stunt people or doubles,
stand-ins
computer generated images,

In short, 100% BS.

Same can be said for music videos.

You're all bitching about it because it's another reason to knock China, the same China that hosted a near perfect Olympics and the same China which played a near perfect host to many people from all over the world.

I'm shocked. well maybe not, maybe a little surprised.

Geez who gives a to$$, so it was recorded, big deal.

I'm in a strange place here, siding with the party line. A seven year old girl could easily be forgiven for needing a little help from technology given the enormity of what the wee soul was asked to do.
A professional orchestra, on the other hand, has but one reason to exist. Playing live! If a mistake is made, so be it, they're only human. Otherwise there is archive material aplenty available for a fraction of the cost and without the superior attitude that so often comes from the classically trained muso.

#9 That wasn't the story Douglas — she wasn't miming her own voice, it was the voice of onother kid that they didn't think was good enough to appear in public.
11

Douglas,

Bathgate 30/08/2008 10:10:46
I got all that Yane but the story is about deception in places other than China. The wee lass being substituted for one thought to be more appealing to the eye is a scenario mirrored the world over and is (imho) secondary.
12

Let's have the truth,

Queensland 30/08/2008 10:37:27
If some of you people get off on pointing out deceptions why don't you concentrate on the Bush regime that through its deceptions is responsible for innumerable innocent deaths?

Both Chinese girls brought pleasure to the world which is more than can be said for the the current whitehouse incumbents.

In comparison to the current Whitehouse incumbents, a dead dog would bring people more pleasure.

>> “The Beijing ceremony's chief music director said the real singer, Yang Peiyi, with her chubby face and crooked baby teeth, was not good-looking enough.”.

This is a meme invented by the media to sensationalize the issue. They twisted the music director Chen Qigang’s words. Thank god, the video of Chen’s interview is available on Internet.

Lip-sync did happen. I do not intend to defend it. But Chen did not say anything bad about Yang Peiyi. Chen said they selected three finalists from many candidates (Three names were listed for this song on the playbill of the opening ceremony, including Yang, Lin and Lei Cixin). First the image must be good. Then the voice must be good. So he actually implied that Yang’s image was good. Then he said Lin had the best image, internal feeling and expression. Yang had the flawless voice. Their intention was to present the best image and the best voice to the world.

But Yang is 7 years old. How would she act in front of 90000 in the Bird’s Nest? Was she a little shy? We really do not know. Chen did not talk about it. But it seems the decision was made on the basis of ability to perform on stage, not just about looks.

You certainly can question or ridicule their judgment.

JP860 It's not strange that the western press has once again misrepresented the truth. Yang Peiyi was indeed unable to perform to the director's expectations.
She did not convey the right expression and feeling.
Calling her chubby faced and crooked toothed is the media's invention and very cruel, considering.

Yane,

#15 "Not just about looks" — so it was partly about looks?
#16 Where's the misrepresentation of the truth? One kid sang, the other kid mimed her voice — check out what happened to Milli Vanilli when they were busted. Same kinda hammering, it's got naf all to do with you being Chinese.
The ceremony was brilliant, it was a real spectacular, well done!
